Since commit f02e8a6596b7 ("module: Sort exported symbols"), EXPORT_SYMBOL* is placed in the individual section ___ksymtab(_gpl)+ (3 leading underscores instead of 2). Since then, modpost cannot detect the bad combination of EXPORT_SYMBOL and __init/__exit. Fix the .fromsec field. modpost: fix undefined behavior of is_arm_mapping_symbol()

[ Upstream commit d6b732666a1bae0df3c3ae06925043bba34502b1 ] The return value of is_arm_mapping_symbol() is unpredictable when "$" is passed in. strchr(3) says: The strchr() and strrchr() functions return a pointer to the matched character or NULL if the character is not found. The terminating null byte is considered part of the string, so that if c is specified as '\0', these functions return a pointer to the terminator. When str[1] is '\0', strchr("axtd", str[1]) is not NULL, and str[2] is referenced (i.e. buffer overrun). modpost: fix removing numeric suffixes

[ Upstream commit b5beffa20d83c4e15306c991ffd00de0d8628338 ] With the `-z unique-symbol` linker flag or any similar mechanism, it is possible to trigger the following: ERROR: modpost: "param_set_uint.0" [vmlinux] is a static EXPORT_SYMBOL The reason is that for now the condition from remove_dot(): if (m && (s[n + m] == '.' || s[n + m] == 0)) which was designed to test if it's a dot or a '\0' after the suffix is never satisfied. This is due to that `s[n + m]` always points to the last digit of a numeric suffix, not on the symbol next to it (from a custom debug print added to modpost): param_set_uint.0, s[n + m] is '0', s[n + m + 1] is '\0' So it's off-by-one and was like that since 2014. Fix this for the sake of any potential upcoming features, but don't bother stable-backporting, as it's well hidden -- apart from that LD flag, it can be triggered only with GCC LTO which never landed upstream. kbuild: generate Module.symvers only when vmlinux exists

[ Upstream commit 69bc8d386aebbd91a6bb44b6d33f77c8dfa9ed8c ] The external module build shows the following warning if Module.symvers is missing in the kernel tree. WARNING: Symbol version dump "Module.symvers" is missing. Modules may not have dependencies or modversions. I think this is an important heads-up because the resulting modules may not work as expected. This happens when you did not build the entire kernel tree, for example, you might have prepared the minimal setups for external modules by 'make defconfig && make modules_preapre'. A problem is that 'make modules' creates Module.symvers even without vmlinux. In this case, that warning is suppressed since Module.symvers already exists in spite of its incomplete content. The incomplete (i.e. invalid) Module.symvers should not be created. This commit changes the second pass of modpost to dump symbols into modules-only.symvers. The final Module.symvers is created by concatenating vmlinux.symvers and modules-only.symvers if both exist. Module.symvers is supposed to collect symbols from both vmlinux and modules. It might be a bit confusing, and I am not quite sure if it is an official interface, but presumably it is difficult to rename it because some tools (e.g. kmod) parse it. Use a more generic form for __section that requires quotes to avoid complications with clang and gcc differences. Remove the quote operator # from compiler_attributes.h __section macro. Convert all unquoted __section(foo) uses to quoted __section("foo"). Also convert __attribute__((section("foo"))) uses to __section("foo") even if the __attribute__ has multiple list entry forms. strsep() is neither standard C nor POSIX and used outside the kernel code here. Using it here requires that the build host supports it out of the box which is e.g. not true for a Darwin build host and using a cross-compiler. This leads to: scripts/mod/modpost.c:145:2: warning: implicit declaration of function 'strsep' [-Wimplicit-function-declaration] return strsep(stringp, "\n"); ^ and a segfault when running MODPOST. See also: https://stackoverflow.com/a/7219504 So let's replace this by strchr() instead of using strsep(). It does not hurt kernel size or speed since this code is run on the build host.
