Fix VMLINUZ_LOAD_ADDRESS calculation to be based on the length of
vmlinux.bin, the actual uncompressed kernel binary.
Previously it was based on the length of KBUILD_IMAGE (the unstripped ELF
vmlinux), which is bigger than vmlinux.bin. As a result, vmlinuz was
loaded into a memory address higher then actually needed - a problem for
small memory platforms.

The compressed vmlinux.bin is only a temp file so it's ok to use the same
suffix .z for them (.gz,.lzo,.lzma...) to remove several lines and simpify
the maintenance (no need to add the "suffix_$(xxx) := suffix" line).

- use hostprogs-y for the elf2ecoff
- list all *.o file in targets
- renamed obj-y to vmlinuzobjs-y (it was confusing to re-use a kbuild variable)
- fix all uses of if_changed/cmd
- use kbuild rules to beautify output
- update clean-file to clean vmlinuz.* in top-level directory
- simplied logic in arch/mips/Makefile for compressed targets
The net result is a more kbuild conformant Makefile but
readability did not increase.

This patch adds a new DEBUG_ZBOOT option to allow the users to enable it
to debug the compressed kernel support for a new board and this optoin
should be disabled to reduce the kernel image size and speed up the
kernel booting procedure when the compressed kernel support is stable.

POSIX requires $((<expression>)) arithmetic in sh only to have long
arithmetic so on 32-bit sh binaries might do only 32-bit arithmetic but
the arithmetic done in arch/mips/boot/compressed/Makefile needs 64-bit.
I play with the AR7 platform, so VMLINUX_LOAD_ADDRESS is
0xffffffff94100000, and for an example 4MiB kernel
VMLINUZ_LOAD_ADDRESS is made out to be:

The former is obviously correct whilst the later breaks things royally.
Fortunately working with only the lower 32bit's works for both bash and
dash:

$ dash -c 'printf "%x\n" $((0x94100000 + 0x400000))'
94500000
----
So, we can split the original 64bit string to two parts, and only
calculate the low 32bit part, which is big enough (1GiB kernel sizes
anyone?) for a normal Linux kernel image file, now, we calculate the
VMLINUZ_LOAD_ADDRESS like this:
1. if present, append top 32bit of VMLINUX_LOAD_ADDRESS" as a prefix
2. get the sum of the low 32bit of VMLINUX_LOAD_ADDRESS + VMLINUX_SIZE
This patch fixes vmlinuz kernel builds on systems where only a
32bit-only math shell is available.

o Remove the .initrd section. The initrd section was already handled
when vmlinux was linked.
o Discard .MIPS.options, .options, .pdr, .reginfo, .comment and .note
sections. If .MIPS.options is not removed, kernels compiled with gcc
3.4.6 will not boot.
o Clean up the file format.
o Remove several other unneeded sections.
Tested with GCC 3.4.6 and 4.4.1 with and without initrd.

This patch helps to generate smaller kernel images for linux-MIPS,
Here is the effect when using lzma:
$ ls -sh vmlinux
7.1M vmlinux
$ ls -sh vmlinuz
1.5M vmlinuz
Have tested the 32bit kernel on Qemu/Malta and 64bit kernel on FuLoong
Mini PC. both of them work well. and also, tested by Alexander Clouter
on an AR7 based Linksys WAG54Gv2, and by Manuel Lauss on an Alchemy
board.
This -v2 version incorporate the feedback from Ralf, and add the
following changes:
1. add .ecoff, .bin, .erec format support
2. only enable it and the debug source code for the machines we tested
3. a dozen of fixups and cleanups
and if you want to enable it for your board, please try to select
SYS_SUPPORTS_ZBOOT for it, and if the board have an 16550 compatible
uart, you can select SYS_SUPPORTS_ZBOOT_UART16550 directly. and then
sending the relative patches to Ralf.

o General updates of MIPS to 2.6.10-rc2
o Remove the Baget platform due to lack of maintenance over several years.
Some of the drivers remain and will be removed in a separate patch.
o Remove the HP Laserjet platform. No user reports ever and no patches from
the original submitters made this port a neat hack - and a directory full
of clutter.

This contains all the generic 32-bit MIPS code, so all arch/mips/ and
include/asm-mips/ stuff.

Makefiles no longer need to include Rules.make, which is currently an
empty file. This patch removes it from the arch tree Makefiles.
|

These didn't have any associated rules, so they can as well just go.
|
|
The current top-level Makefile has a fundamental problem which
makes "make oldconfig vmlinux" impossible:
It includes .config, which is changed by "oldconfig". So after "oldconfig"
.config has changed and the .config the Makefile had read is obsolete.
make provides a mechanism to cope with this, it'll restart automatically
if any of the files it included changed, if you let it know that you
changed it, just using a normal rule which has .config as its target.
However, once you tell make that "make oldconfig" changes .config, you
have another problem: oldconfig always uses .config to be remade, there's
no mechanism to tell if it's up to date. So makes notices that .config
has changed, restarts, makes oldconfig again, notices that .config has
changed, restarts, ... you get the picture.
The way to solve this is to do a proper two-stage approach: If you just
say "make oldconfig", there's no need for the Makefile to even read the
.config. If it does not, it won't restart and recurse infintely.
So we divide the Makefile into two sections: One for targets which don't
need the variables from .config, like *config, clean, mrproper and
one section which does the actual build, which needs to know the
CONFIG_ options.
If one of the "noconfig" targets is given, we handle those, without
reading .config. From there, we call make again, filtering out the already
handled targets, to do the main work.
The fact that this actually works correctly can be seen by trying
"make vmlinux oldconfig" which will execute things in the right
order - and this is not just nitpicking, it means that "-j" will
get this case right, too.
The $(CONFIGURATION) hack used to start "make config" automatically
can go away now, too. Since we don't know which of make *config the
user prefers, we'll just ask him call "make whatever-config" himself,
instead of forcing "make config" on him.

FORCE is the de-facto standard name for a prequisite to force
recompilation, so instead of using a mix of 'dummy','FORCE' and
'FORCE_RECOMPILE' use 'FORCE' everywhere.
Also, move figuring out the path relative to the top level dir
into Rules.make, instead of calling an external script.
