2025-05-02perf: arm_pmu: Don't disable counter in armpmu_add()Mark Rutland
[ Upstream commit dcca27bc1eccb9abc2552aab950b18a9742fb8e7 ] Currently armpmu_add() tries to handle a newly-allocated counter having a stale associated event, but this should not be possible, and if this were to happen the current mitigation is insufficient and potentially expensive. It would be better to warn if we encounter the impossible case. Calls to pmu::add() and pmu::del() are serialized by the core perf code, and armpmu_del() clears the relevant slot in pmu_hw_events::events[] before clearing the bit in pmu_hw_events::used_mask such that the counter can be reallocated. Thus when armpmu_add() allocates a counter index from pmu_hw_events::used_mask, it should not be possible to observe a stale even in pmu_hw_events::events[] unless either pmu_hw_events::used_mask or pmu_hw_events::events[] have been corrupted. If this were to happen, we'd end up with two events with the same event->hw.idx, which would clash with each other during reprogramming, deletion, etc, and produce bogus results. Add a WARN_ON_ONCE() for this case so that we can detect if this ever occurs in practice. That possiblity aside, there's no need to call arm_pmu::disable(event) for the new event. The PMU reset code initialises the counter in a disabled state, and armpmu_del() will disable the counter before it can be reused. Remove the redundant disable. [ Upstream commit b805cafc604bfdb671fae7347a57f51154afa735 ] When we fail to register the uncore pmu, the pmu context may not been allocated. The error handing will call cpuhp_state_remove_instance() to call uncore pmu offline callback, which migrate the pmu context. Since that's liable to lead to some kind of use-after-free. Use cpuhp_state_remove_instance_nocalls() instead of cpuhp_state_remove_instance() so that the notifiers don't execute after the PMU device has been failed to register. But in arm_cmn_handle_irq(), only handled the overflow status of Bits[3:0] which results in unhandled overflow status of counters 4 to 7. So let the overflow status of DTC counters 4 to 7 to be handled. 2023-09-23perf/imx_ddr: speed up overflow frequency of cycleXu Yang
[ Upstream commit e89ecd8368860bf05437eabd07d292c316221cfc ] For i.MX8MP, we cannot ensure that cycle counter overflow occurs at least 4 times as often as other events. Due to byte counters will count for any event configured, it will overflow more often. And if byte counters overflow that related counters would stop since they share the COUNTER_CNTL. We can speed up cycle counter overflow frequency by setting counter parameter (CP) field of cycle counter. In this way, we can avoid stop counting byte counters when interrupt didn't come and the byte counters can be fetched or updated from each cycle counter overflow interrupt. Because we initialize CP filed to shorten counter0 overflow time, the cycle counter will start couting from a fixed/base value each time. We need to remove the base from the result too. Therefore, we could get precise result from cycle counter. 2023-09-23perf/smmuv3: Enable HiSilicon Erratum 162001900 quirk for HIP08/09Yicong Yang
[ Upstream commit 0242737dc4eb9f6e9a5ea594b3f93efa0b12f28d ] Some HiSilicon SMMU PMCG suffers the erratum 162001900 that the PMU disable control sometimes fail to disable the counters. This will lead to error or inaccurate data since before we enable the counters the counter's still counting for the event used in last perf session. This patch tries to fix this by hardening the global disable process. Before disable the PMU, writing an invalid event type (0xffff) to focibly stop the counters. Correspondingly restore each events on pmu::pmu_enable(). [ Upstream commit f4e2bd91ddf5e8543cbe7ad80b3fba3d2dc63fa3 ] In current driver, counter0 will be enabled after ddr_perf_pmu_enable() is called even though none of the 4 counters are used. This will cause counter0 continue to count until ddr_perf_pmu_disabled() is called. If pmu is not disabled all the time, the pmu interrupt will be asserted from time to time due to counter0 will overflow and irq handler will clear it. It's not an expected behavior. This patch will not enable counter0 if none of 4 counters are used. 2023-07-23perf/arm-cmn: Fix DTC resetRobin Murphy
[ Upstream commit 71746c995cac92fcf6a65661b51211cf2009d7f0 ] It turns out that my naive DTC reset logic fails to work as intended, since, after checking with the hardware designers, the PMU actually needs to be fully enabled in order to correctly clear any pending overflows. Therefore, invert the sequence to start with turning on both enables so that we can reliably get the DTCs into a known state, then moving to our normal counters-stopped state from there. Since all the DTM counters have already been unpaired during the initial discovery pass, we just need to additionally reset the cycle counters to ensure that no other unexpected overflows occur during this period. 2022-08-17drivers/perf: arm_spe: Fix consistency of SYS_PMSCR_EL1.CXAnshuman Khandual
[ Upstream commit 92f2b8bafa3d6e89c750e9d301a8b7ab76aaa8b6 ] The arm_spe_pmu driver will enable SYS_PMSCR_EL1.CX in order to add CONTEXT packets into the traces, if the owner of the perf event runs with required capabilities i.e CAP_PERFMON or CAP_SYS_ADMIN via perfmon_capable() helper. The value of this bit is computed in the arm_spe_event_to_pmscr() function but the check for capabilities happens in the pmu event init callback i.e arm_spe_pmu_event_init(). This suggests that the value of the CX bit should remain consistent for the duration of the perf session. However, the function arm_spe_event_to_pmscr() may be called later during the event start callback i.e arm_spe_pmu_start() when the "current" process is not the owner of the perf session, hence the CX bit setting is currently not consistent. One way to fix this, is by caching the required value of the CX bit during the initialization of the PMU event, so that it remains consistent for the duration of the session. It uses currently unused 'event->hw.flags' element to cache perfmon_capable() value, which can be referred during event start callback to compute SYS_PMSCR_EL1.CX. This ensures consistent availability of context packets in the trace as per event owner capabilities. Drop BIT(SYS_PMSCR_EL1_CX_SHIFT) check in arm_spe_pmu_event_init(), because now CX bit cannot be set in arm_spe_event_to_pmscr() with perfmon_capable() disabled. In the case where there is only a cycle counter available (i.e. PMCR_EL0.N is 0) and an event other than CPU cycles is opened, the open should fail as the event can never possibly be scheduled. However, the event validation when an event is opened is skipped when the group leader is opened. Fix this by always validating the group leader events. 2021-09-20KVM: arm64: Fix PMU probe orderingMarc Zyngier
Russell reported that since 5.13, KVM's probing of the PMU has started to fail on his HW. As it turns out, there is an implicit ordering dependency between the architectural PMU probing code and and KVM's own probing. If, due to probe ordering reasons, KVM probes before the PMU driver, it will fail to detect the PMU and prevent it from being advertised to guests as well as the VMM. Obviously, this is one probing too many, and we should be able to deal with any ordering. Add a callback from the PMU code into KVM to advertise the registration of a host CPU PMU, allowing for any probing order. 2021-06-11perf/smmuv3: Don't trample existing events with global filterRobin Murphy
With global filtering, we only allow an event to be scheduled if its filter settings exactly match those of any existing events, therefore it is pointless to reapply the filter in that case. Much worse, though, is that in doing that we trample the event type of counter 0 if it's already active, and never touch the appropriate PMEVTYPERn so the new event is likely not counting the right thing either. Don't do that.
