2007-05-29sparc64: fix alignment bug in linker definition scriptSam Ravnborg
The RO_DATA section were hardcoded to a specific alignment in include/asm-generic/vmlinux.h. But for sparc64 this did not match the PAGE_SIZE. Introduce a new section definition named: RO_DATA that takes actual alignment as parameter. RODATA are provided for backward compatibility. warnings Throughout the kernel there are a few legitimite references to init or exit sections. Most of these are covered by the patterns included in modpost but a few nees special attention. To avoid hardcoding a lot of function names in modpost introduce a marker so relevant function/data can be marked. When modpost see a reference to a init/exit function from a function/data marked no warning will be issued. 2006-12-20PCI: Fix multiple problems with VIA hardwareAlan Cox
This patch is designed to fix: - Disk eating corruptor on KT7 after resume from RAM - VIA IRQ handling - VIA fixups for bus lockups after resume from RAM The core of this is to add a table of resume fixups run at resume time. We need to do this for a variety of boards and features, but particularly we need to do this to get various critical VIA fixups done on resume. The second part of the problem is to handle VIA IRQ number rules which are a bit odd and need special handling for PIC interrupts. Various patches broke various boxes and while this one may not be perfect (hopefully it is) it ensures the workaround is applied to the right devices only. 2006-12-08[PATCH] Generic BUG implementationJeremy Fitzhardinge
This patch adds common handling for kernel BUGs, for use by architectures as they wish. The code is derived from arch/powerpc. The advantages of having common BUG handling are: - consistent BUG reporting across architectures - shared implementation of out-of-line file/line data - implement CONFIG_DEBUG_BUGVERBOSE consistently This means that in inline impact of BUG is just the illegal instruction itself, which is an improvement for i386 and x86-64. A BUG is represented in the instruction stream as an illegal instruction, which has file/line information associated with it. This extra information is stored in the __bug_table section in the ELF file. When the kernel gets an illegal instruction, it first confirms it might possibly be from a BUG (ie, in kernel mode, the right illegal instruction). It then calls report_bug(). This searches __bug_table for a matching instruction pointer, and if found, prints the corresponding file/line information. If report_bug() determines that it wasn't a BUG which caused the trap, it returns BUG_TRAP_TYPE_NONE. Some architectures (powerpc) implement WARN using the same mechanism; if the illegal instruction was the result of a WARN, then report_bug(Q) returns CONFIG_DEBUG_BUGVERBOSE; otherwise it returns BUG_TRAP_TYPE_BUG. lib/bug.c keeps a list of loaded modules which can be searched for __bug_table entries. The architecture must call module_bug_finalize()/module_bug_cleanup() from its corresponding module_finalize/cleanup functions. Unsetting CONFIG_DEBUG_BUGVERBOSE will reduce the kernel size by some amount. At the very least, filename and line information will not be recorded for each but, but architectures may decide to store no extra information per BUG at all. Unfortunately, gcc doesn't have a general way to mark an asm() as noreturn, so architectures will generally have to include an infinite loop (or similar) in the BUG code, so that gcc knows execution won't continue beyond that point. gcc does have a __builtin_trap() operator which may be useful to achieve the same effect, unfortunately it cannot be used to actually implement the BUG itself, because there's no way to get the instruction's address for use in generating the __bug_table entry. 2006-12-07[PATCH] i386: Distinguish absolute symbolsVivek Goyal
Ld knows about 2 kinds of symbols, absolute and section relative. Section relative symbols symbols change value when a section is moved and absolute symbols do not. Currently in the linker script we have several labels marking the beginning and ending of sections that are outside of sections, making them absolute symbols. Having a mixture of absolute and section relative symbols refereing to the same data is currently harmless but it is confusing. This must be done carefully as newer revs of ld do not place symbols that appear in sections without data and instead ld makes those symbols global :( My ultimate goal is to build a relocatable kernel. The safest and least intrusive technique is to generate relocation entries so the kernel can be relocated at load time. The only penalty would be an increase in the size of the kernel binary. The problem is that if absolute and relocatable symbols are not properly specified absolute symbols will be relocated or section relative symbols won't be, which is fatal. The practical motivation is that when generating kernels that will run from a reserved area for analyzing what caused a kernel panic, it is simpler if you don't need to hard code the physical memory location they will run at, especially for the distributions. This is a quick hack to overcome the fact that SRCU currently does not allow static initializers, and we need to sometimes initialize those things before any other initializers (even "core" ones) can do so. Currently we don't allow this at all for modules, and the only user that needs is right now is cpufreq. 2006-10-27[PATCH] drivers: wait for threaded probes between initcall levelsAndrew Morton
The multithreaded-probing code has a problem: after one initcall level (eg, core_initcall) has been processed, we will then start processing the next level (postcore_initcall) while the kernel threads which are handling core_initcall are still executing. This breaks the guarantees which the layered initcalls previously gave us. IOW, we want to be multithreaded _within_ an initcall level, but not between different levels. Fix that up by causing the probing code to wait for all outstanding probes at one level to complete before we start processing the next level. 2006-10-21[PATCH] x86-64: Speed up dwarf2 unwinderJan Beulich
This changes the dwarf2 unwinder to do a binary search for CIEs instead of a linear work. The linker is unfortunately not able to build a proper lookup table at link time, instead it creates one at runtime as soon as the bootmem allocator is usable (so you'll continue using the linear lookup for the first [hopefully] few calls). 2006-09-26[PATCH] x86: put .note.* sections into a PT_NOTE segment in vmlinuxJeremy Fitzhardinge
This patch will pack any .note.* section into a PT_NOTE segment in the output file. To do this, we tell ld that we need a PT_NOTE segment. This requires us to start explicitly mapping sections to segments, so we also need to explicitly create PT_LOAD segments for text and data, and map the sections to them appropriately. Fortunately, each section will default to its previous section's segment, so it doesn't take many changes to vmlinux.lds.S. This only changes i386 for now, but I presume the corresponding changes for other architectures will be as simple. Temporarily add EXPORT_UNUSED_SYMBOL and EXPORT_UNUSED_SYMBOL_GPL. These will be used as a transition measure for symbols that aren't used in the kernel and are on the way out. When a module uses such a symbol, a warning is printk'd at modprobe time. The main reason for removing unused exports is size: eacho export takes roughly between 100 and 150 bytes of kernel space in the binary. This patch gives users the option to immediately get this size gain via a config option. 2005-11-07[PATCH] RapidIO support: core baseMatt Porter
Adds a RapidIO subsystem to the kernel. RIO is a switched fabric interconnect used in higher-end embedded applications. The curious can look at the specs over at http://www.rapidio.org The core code implements enumeration/discovery, management of devices/resources, and interfaces for RIO drivers. There's a lot more to do to take advantages of all the hardware features. However, this should provide a good base for folks with RIO hardware to start contributing. 2005-09-10[PATCH] i386 / uml: add dwarf sections to static link scriptPaolo 'Blaisorblade' Giarrusso
Inside the linker script, insert the code for DWARF debug info sections. This may help GDB'ing a Uml binary. Actually, it seems that ld is able to guess what I added correctly, but normal linker scripts include this section so it should be correct anyway adding it. On request by Sam Ravnborg <sam@ravnborg.org>, I've added it to asm-generic/vmlinux.lds.s. I've also moved there the stabs debug section, used the new macro in i386 linker script and added DWARF debug section to that. In the truth, I've not been able to verify the difference in GDB behaviour after this change (I've seen large improvements with another patch). This may depend on my binutils version, older one may have worse defaults. However, this section is present in normal linker script, so add it at least for the sake of cleanness. 2005-09-07[PATCH] Kprobes: prevent possible race conditions genericPrasanna S Panchamukhi
There are possible race conditions if probes are placed on routines within the kprobes files and routines used by the kprobes. For example if you put probe on get_kprobe() routines, the system can hang while inserting probes on any routine such as do_fork(). Because while inserting probes on do_fork(), register_kprobes() routine grabs the kprobes spin lock and executes get_kprobe() routine and to handle probe of get_kprobe(), kprobes_handler() gets executed and tries to grab kprobes spin lock, and spins forever. This patch avoids such possible race conditions by preventing probes on routines within the kprobes file and routines used by kprobes. I have modified the patches as per Andi Kleen's suggestion to move kprobes routines and other routines used by kprobes to a seperate section .kprobes.text. Also moved page fault and exception handlers, general protection fault to .kprobes.text section. These patches have been tested on i386, x86_64 and ppc64 architectures, also compiled on ia64 and sparc64 architectures. Several reports on inconsistent kallsyms data has been caused by the aliased symbols __sched_text_start and __down to shift places in the output of nm. The root cause was that on second pass ld aligned __sched_text_start to a 4 byte boundary which is the function alignment on i386. sched.text and spinlock.text is now aligned to an 8 byte boundary to make sure they are aligned to a function alignemnt on most (all?) archs. In vmlinux.lds.h the code is carefull to define every section so vmlinux properly reports the correct physical load address of code, as well as it's virtual address. The new SECURITY_INIT definition fails to follow that convention and and causes incorrect physical address to appear in the vmlinux if there are any security initcalls. This patch updates the SECURITY_INIT to follow the convention in the rest of the file. I sort of hate to add another pass of PCI fixups, so I'm open to alternate solutions if anybody suggests one. Add a "pci_fixup_enable" pass of PCI fixups. These are run at the end of pci_enable_device() to fix up things like IRQs that are not set up until then. Some VIA boards require a fixup after the IRQ is set up. This patch achieves out of line spinlocks by creating kernel/spinlock.c and using the _raw_* inline locking functions. Now, as much as this is supposed to be arch agnostic, there was still a fair amount of rummaging about in archs, mostly for the cases where the arch already has out of line locks and i wanted to avoid the extra call, saving that extra call also makes lock profiling easier. PPC32/64 was an example of such an arch and i have added the necessary profile_pc() function as an example. It's a pain in the arse to set up platform-specific PCI quirks -- you have to put your platform-specific quirk into the generic (or at least the architecture) array. This patch fixes that, allowing you to DECLARE_PCI_FIXUP_HEADER() or DECLARE_PCI_FIXUP_FINAL() anywhere you like. 2004-04-11[PATCH] Fix get_wchan() FIXME wrt. order of functionsAndrew Morton
From: William Lee Irwin III <wli@holomorphy.com> This addresses the issue with get_wchan() that the various functions acting as scheduling-related primitives are not, in fact, contiguous in the text segment. It creates an ELF section for scheduling primitives to be placed in, and places currently-detected (i.e. skipped during stack decoding) scheduling primitives and others like io_schedule() and down(), which are currently missed by get_wchan() code, into this section also. The net effects are more reliability of get_wchan()'s results and the new ability, made use of by this code, to arbitrarily place scheduling primitives in the source code without disturbing get_wchan()'s accuracy. Suggestions by Arnd Bergmann and Matthew Wilcox regarding reducing the invasiveness of the patch were incorporated during prior rounds of review. I've at least tried to sweep all arches in this patch.

This patch adds the new config option CONFIG_MODVERSIONING which will be the new way of checking for ABI changes between kernel and module code. This and the following patches are in part based on an initial implementation by Rusty Russell and I believe some of the ideas go back to discussions on linux-kbuild, Keith Owens and Rusty. though I'm not sure I think credit for the basic idea of storing version info in sections goes to Keith Owens and Rusty. o Rename __gpl_ksymtab to __ksymtab_gpl since that looks more consistent and appending _gpl instead of putting it into the middle simplifies sharing code for EXPORT_SYMBOL() and EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL() o Add CONFIG_MODVERSIONING o If CONFIG_MODVERSIONING is set, add a section __kcrctab{,_gpl}, which contains the ABI checksums for the exported symbols listed in __ksymtab{,_crc} Since we don't know the checksums yet at compilation time, just make them an unresolved symbol which gets filled in by the linker later.

In a discussion with Sam Ravnborg, the following problem became apparent: Most vmlinux.lds.S (but the ARM ones) used the following construct: __start___ksymtab = .; __ksymtab : AT(ADDR(__ksymtab) - LOAD_OFFSET) { *(__ksymtab) } __stop___ksymtab = .; However, the link will align the beginning of the section __ksymtab according to the requirements for the input sections. If '.' (current location counter) wasn't sufficiently aligned before, it's possible that __ksymtab actually starts at an address after the one __start___ksymtab points to, which will confuse the users of __start___ksymtab badly. The fix is to follow what the ARM Makefiles did for this case, ie __ksymtab : AT(ADDR(__ksymtab) - LOAD_OFFSET) { __start___ksymtab = .; *(__ksymtab) __stop___ksymtab = .; }

Allow for different LMA vs VMA (logical/virtual memory address). IA-64 uses the LMA to tell the bootloader the physical location of the image, whereas the VMA as always represents the address the image gets mapped to. The default (used for non IA-64) is LMA == VMA, which is what the linker previously assumed anyway. Also: o remove duplicate .rodata1 section o __vermagic doesn't need its own section in vmlinux, it can just go into .rodata o .kstrtab hasn't been used since the introduction of the new module loader, so it should be deleted from the linker scripts as well (except for arch/um, which does not seem up to date w.r.t the new module loader yet) o The kallsyms mechanism has changed to not need its own section, so again the references in the linker scripts can go away

The current code reserves 60 bytes for the symbol string of every exported symbol, unnecessarily wasting kernel memory since most symbols are much shorter. We revert to the 2.4 solution where the actual strings are saved out of line and only the pointers are kept. The latest module-init-tools already handle this case, people who are using older versions need to update to make sure depmod works properly. Saves 80 KB in vmlinux with my .config.

It's annoying having to touch 20+ arch vmlinux.lds.S file for every new section introduced, just because they all duplicate the same statements. Since we preprocess vmlinux.lds.S anyway, let's #include <asm-generic/vmlinux.lds.h> and share the common statements. This is a first step in consolidating most of the read-only sections.
