2007-10-17lib: percpu_counter_subPeter Zijlstra
Hugh spotted that some code does: percpu_counter_add(&counter, -unsignedlong) which, when the amount argument is of type s32, sort-of works thanks to two's-complement. However when we'd change the type to s64 this breaks on 32bit machines, because the promotion rules zero extend the unsigned number. Provide percpu_counter_sub() to hide the s64 cast. That is: percpu_counter_sub(&counter, foo) is equal to: percpu_counter_add(&counter, -(s64)foo); Signed-off-by: Peter Zijlstra <a.p.zijlstra@chello.nl> Cc: Hugh Dickins <hugh@veritas.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

2007-07-16percpu_counters(): use cpu notifiersAndrew Morton
per-cpu counters presently must iterate over all possible CPUs in the exhaustive percpu_counter_sum(). But it can be much better to only iterate over the presently-online CPUs. To do this, we must arrange for an offlined CPU's count to be spilled into the counter's central count. We can do this for all percpu_counters in the machine by linking them into a single global list and walking that list at CPU_DEAD time. (I hope. Might have race windows in which the percpu_counter_sum() count is inaccurate?) 2006-06-23[PATCH] percpu counter data type changes to suppport more than 2**31 ext3 ↵Mingming Cao
free blocks counter The percpu counter data type are changed in this set of patches to support more users like ext3 who need more than 32 bit to store the free blocks total in the filesystem. - Generic perpcu counters data type changes. The size of the global counter and local counter were explictly specified using s64 and s32. The global counter is changed from long to s64, while the local counter is changed from long to s32, so we could avoid doing 64 bit update in most cases. - Users of the percpu counters are updated to make use of the new percpu_counter_init() routine now taking an additional parameter to allow users to pass the initial value of the global counter. 2006-03-08[PATCH] percpu_counter_sum()Andrew Morton
Implement percpu_counter_sum(). This is a more accurate but slower version of percpu_counter_read_positive(). We need this for Alex's speedup-ext3_statfs patch and for the nr_file accounting fix. Otherwise these things would be too inaccurate on large CPU counts. Cc: Ravikiran G Thirumalai <kiran@scalex86.org> Cc: Alex Tomas <alex@clusterfs.com> Cc: "David S. 2003-12-29[PATCH] use alloc_percpu in percpu_countersAndrew Morton
From: Martin Hicks <mort@wildopensource.com> Once NR_CPUS exceeds about 300 ext2 and ext3 will not compile, because the percpu counters in the superblocks are so huge that they cannot be kmalloced. Fix this by converting the percpu_counter mechanism to use alloc_percpu() rather than an NR_CPUS-sized array.
2003-04-29[PATCH] percpu counters cause UML compilation errors in with SMPAndrew Morton
The percpu counters break UML SMP compilation (in current 2.5.58 bk snapshot) (first NR_CPUS undeclared in header, then dereference of incomplete structure in .c file)
2003-04-12[PATCH] percpu_counters: approximate but scalable countersAndrew Morton
Several places in ext2 and ext3 are using filesystem-wide counters which use global locking. Mainly for the orlov allocator's heuristics. To solve the contention which this causes we can trade off accuracy against speed. This patch introduces a "percpu_counter" library type in which the counts are per-cpu and are periodically spilled into a global counter. Readers only read the global counter. These objects are *large*. On a 32 CPU P4, they are 4 kbytes. On a 4 way p3, 128 bytes.
