This is the patch to migrate Wireless Extension from WE-16 to
WE-17 for kernel 2.6.X. I would like you to queue that patch and
submit it to Linus as soon as 2.6.8 is released (so it can be fully
tested during 2.6.9). If you want, I can resend that as soon as 2.6.8
is released.
The patch is basically unchanged compared to the version
posted to the netdev list and my web page one month ago, I just
re-diff to the latest kernel (2.6.8-rc2-bk12). The patch already
included feedback from various driver maintainers, and nobody else
complained, so I guess it's ready.
The patch for some drivers inside the kernel will follow
(airo.c, wavelan.c, wavelan_cs). Patch for various other drivers
(orinoco, hostap, prism54) have been sent already to their maintainers
(one month ago) and basically waiting for this patch.

I also added on my page a version of Wireless Tools that use
RtNetlink instead of ioctls. This is not as clean as I would like, but
is fully functional (if you have WE-19). I know that you were
interested, so feel free to send feedback on that...

This patch for 2.5.68-bk11 will update Wireless Extension to
version 16 :
o increase bitrate and frequency number for 802.11g/802.11a
o enhanced iwspy support
o minor tweaks and cleanups
This patch is only for the core of WE. The patches for the
individual drivers have been sent to their respective maintainers.
Compared to the previous version I sent you a few weeks ago,
I've just updated to the latest kernel.

This reduces the number of "nuber" by four and fixes the spelling
of necessary in one of those files.

for the HostAP driver, with few cleanups and new unused
definitions. The most contention change is that this version now
requires user space to provide the buffer size when making a GET (to
check buffer overrun), which will break very old version of Wireless
Tools (v22 and earlier).

Quick summary : this patch build on the first part to offer
two important new features :
o Wireless Events
o Wireless Cell Scanning
Wireless Events are events generated by device, driver or the
wireless subsystem. It allows for example a device to notify user
space when it register to a new cell (roaming) or loose contact with
the current Access Points. Currently, the other defined events include
some configuration changes and packet drop due to excessive retries,
more may come in the future. All those events are useful for MobileIP,
V-Handoff and Ad-Hoc routing.
Wireless Cell Scanning is a generic API to allow device/drive
to report Wireless Cells discovered (including ESSID, frequency and
QoS). This is similar to what is available in WindowsXP (except that
it's compliant to Wireless Extensions).
This patch has been submitted for review on this list a couple
of time in January, has been on my web page since and used intensively
by other people. It was rediffed to 2.5.6. Driver patches have been
submitted to maintainers.
