2009-10-07wext: refactorJohannes Berg
Refactor wext to * split out iwpriv handling * split out iwspy handling * split out procfs support * allow cfg80211 to have wireless extensions compat code w/o CONFIG_WIRELESS_EXT After this, drivers need to - select WIRELESS_EXT - for wext support - select WEXT_PRIV - for iwpriv support - select WEXT_SPY - for iwspy support except cfg80211 -- which gets new hooks in wext-core.c and can then get wext handlers without CONFIG_WIRELESS_EXT. Wireless extensions procfs support is auto-selected based on PROC_FS and anything that requires the wext core (i.e. WIRELESS_EXT or CFG80211_WEXT). 2009-08-28libipw: switch from ieee80211_* to libipw_* naming policyJohn W. Linville
This eliminates the dual definition of ieee80211_channel (and possibly others), further clarifying who defines what and paving the way for inclusion of cfg80211.h. Signed-off-by: John W. Linville <linville@tuxdriver.com>
2009-07-10wext: constify extra argument to wireless_send_eventJohannes Berg
This is never changed by the function, so can be marked const. Signed-off-by: Johannes Berg <johannes@sipsolutions.net> Signed-off-by: John W. Linville <linville@tuxdriver.com>
2008-06-16wext: Emit event stream entries correctly when compat.David S. Miller
Three major portions to this change: 1) Add IW_EV_COMPAT_LCP_LEN, IW_EV_COMPAT_POINT_OFF, and IW_EV_COMPAT_POINT_LEN helper defines. 2) Delete iw_stream_check_add_*(), they are unused. 3) Add iw_request_info argument to iwe_stream_add_*(), and use it to size the event and pointer lengths correctly depending upon whether IW_REQUEST_FLAG_COMPAT is set or not. 4) The mechanical transformations to the drivers and wireless stack bits to get the iw_request_info passed down into the routines modified in #3. Also, explicit references to IW_EV_LCP_LEN are replaced with iwe_stream_lcp_len(info). With a lot of help and bug fixes from Masakazu Mokuno. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

2007-03-27[PATCH] WE-22 : prevent information leak on 64 bitJean Tourrilhes
Johannes Berg discovered that kernel space was leaking to userspace on 64 bit platform. He made a first patch to fix that. This is an improved version of his patch. Signed-off-by: Jean Tourrilhes <jt@hpl.hp.com> Signed-off-by: John W. Linville <linville@tuxdriver.com>
2006-03-23[PATCH] WE-20 for kernel 2.6.16Jean Tourrilhes
This is version 20 of the Wireless Extensions. This is the completion of the RtNetlink work I started early 2004, it enables the full Wireless Extension API over RtNetlink. Few comments on the patch : o totally driver transparent, no change in drivers needed. o iwevent were already RtNetlink based since they were created (around 2.5.7). This adds all the regular SET and GET requests over RtNetlink, using the exact same mechanism and data format as iwevents. o This is a Kconfig option, as currently most people have no need for it. Surprisingly, patch is actually small and well encapsulated. o Tested on SMP, attention as been paid to make it 64 bits clean. o Code do probably too many checks and could be further optimised, but better safe than sorry. o RtNetlink based version of the Wireless Tools available on my web page for people inclined to try out this stuff. I would also like to thank Alexey Kuznetsov for his helpful suggestions to make this patch better. Signed-off-by: Jean Tourrilhes <jt@hpl.hp.com> Signed-off-by: John W. 2005-09-06[PATCH] WE-19 for kernel 2.6.13Jean Tourrilhes
Hi Jeff, This is version 19 of the Wireless Extensions. It was supposed to be the fallback of the WPA API changes, but people seem quite happy about it (especially Jouni), so the patch is rather small. The patch has been fully tested with 2.6.13 and various wireless drivers, and is in its final version. Would you mind pushing that into Linus's kernel so that the driver and the apps can take advantage ot it ? It includes : o iwstat improvement (explicit dBm). This is the result of long discussions with Dan Williams, the authors of NetworkManager. Thanks to him for all the fruitful feedback. o remove pointer from event stream. I was not totally sure if this pointer was 32-64 bits clean, so I'd rather remove it and be at peace with it. o remove linux header from wireless.h. This has long been requested by people writting user space apps, now it's done, and it was not even painful. o final deprecation of spy_offset. You did not like it, it's now gone for good. o Start deprecating dev->get_wireless_stats -> debloat netdev o Add "check" version of event macros for ieee802.11 stack. Jiri Benc doesn't like the current macros, we aim to please ;-) All those changes, except the last one, have been bit-roting on my web pages for a while... Patches for most kernel drivers will follow. Patches for the Orinoco and the HostAP drivers have been sent to their respective maintainers. Have fun... 2004-11-04[PATCH] Wireless Extension dropped patchletJean Tourrilhes
This tiny bit of the last WE-17 patch was lost between me and you. I initially decided to wait to resubmit, but Chris Wedgwood reported that the MadWifi driver needs it. Sorry for not having pushed harder. I recreated this patch, and tested with 2.6.10-rc1, and Chris tested it with MadWifi. Would you mind pushing that up to Linus ? Changelog : o remove unneeded const o spelling + comments Signed-off-by: Jean Tourrilhes <jt@hpl.hp.com> Signed-off-by: Jeff Garzik <jgarzik@pobox.com>

2004-08-28[PATCH] wireless-extension-v17-for-linus.patchAndrew Morton
From: Jean Tourrilhes <jt@bougret.hpl.hp.com> This is the patch to migrate Wireless Extension from WE-16 to WE-17 for kernel 2.6.X. I would like you to queue that patch and submit it to Linus as soon as 2.6.8 is released (so it can be fully tested during 2.6.9). If you want, I can resend that as soon as 2.6.8 is released. The patch is basically unchanged compared to the version posted to the netdev list and my web page one month ago, I just re-diff to the latest kernel (2.6.8-rc2-bk12). The patch already included feedback from various driver maintainers, and nobody else complained, so I guess it's ready. The patch for some drivers inside the kernel will follow (airo.c, wavelan.c, wavelan_cs). Patch for various other drivers (orinoco, hostap, prism54) have been sent already to their maintainers (one month ago) and basically waiting for this patch. Changelog : * - Add flags to frequency -> auto/fixed * - Document (struct iw_quality *)->updated, add new flags (INVALID) * - Wireless Event capability in struct iw_range * - Add support for relative TxPower (yick !) * - Change the way we get to spy_data method for added safety and hostap * - Remove spy #ifdef, they are always on -> cleaner code * - Allow any size GET request if user specifies length > max * - Start migrating get_wireless_stats to struct iw_handler_def * Based on patch from Pavel Roskin <proski@gnu.org> : * - Fix kernel data leak to user space in private handler handling I also added on my page a version of Wireless Tools that use RtNetlink instead of ioctls. This is not as clean as I would like, but is fully functional (if you have WE-19). I know that you were interested, so feel free to send feedback on that... 2003-05-11[PATCH] Wireless Extension 16Jean Tourrilhes
This patch for 2.5.68-bk11 will update Wireless Extension to version 16 : o increase bitrate and frequency number for 802.11g/802.11a o enhanced iwspy support o minor tweaks and cleanups This patch is only for the core of WE. The patches for the individual drivers have been sent to their respective maintainers. Compared to the previous version I sent you a few weeks ago, I've just updated to the latest kernel.
2003-02-25[PATCH] Spelling fixes: accommodateMichael Hayes
accomodate -> accommodate accomodated -> accommodated accomodates -> accommodates
2002-09-18This is Wireless Extension v15. Mostly enhanced iwpriv supportJean Tourrilhes
for the HostAP driver, with few cleanups and new unused definitions. The most contention change is that this version now requires user space to provide the buffer size when making a GET (to check buffer overrun), which will break very old version of Wireless Tools (v22 and earlier).
2002-05-10Fix four similar off-by-one errors in wireless net drvr core.Jean Tourrilhes
2002-03-10[PATCH] New wireless driver API part 2Jean Tourrilhes
Quick summary : this patch build on the first part to offer two important new features : o Wireless Events o Wireless Cell Scanning Wireless Events are events generated by device, driver or the wireless subsystem. It allows for example a device to notify user space when it register to a new cell (roaming) or loose contact with the current Access Points. Currently, the other defined events include some configuration changes and packet drop due to excessive retries, more may come in the future. All those events are useful for MobileIP, V-Handoff and Ad-Hoc routing. Wireless Cell Scanning is a generic API to allow device/drive to report Wireless Cells discovered (including ESSID, frequency and QoS). This is similar to what is available in WindowsXP (except that it's compliant to Wireless Extensions). This patch has been submitted for review on this list a couple of time in January, has been on my web page since and used intensively by other people. It was rediffed to 2.5.6. Driver patches have been submitted to maintainers.
