2023-01-11Improve TransactionIdDidAbort() documentation.Peter Geoghegan
Document that TransactionIdDidAbort() won't indicate that transactions that were in-progress during a crash have aborted. Tie this to existing discussion of the TransactionIdDidCommit() and TransactionIdDidCommit() protocol that code in heapam_visibility.c (and a few other places) must observe. Follow-up to bugfix commit eb5ad4ff. 2022-06-27Fix visibility check when XID is committed in CLOG but not in procarray.Heikki Linnakangas
TransactionIdIsInProgress had a fast path to return 'false' if the single-item CLOG cache said that the transaction was known to be committed. However, that was wrong, because a transaction is first marked as committed in the CLOG but doesn't become visible to others until it has removed its XID from the proc array. That could lead to an error: ERROR: t_xmin is uncommitted in tuple to be updated or for an UPDATE to go ahead without blocking, before the previous UPDATE on the same row was made visible. The window is usually very short, but synchronous replication makes it much wider, because the wait for synchronous replica happens in that window. Another thing that makes it hard to hit is that it's hard to get such a commit-in-progress transaction into the single item CLOG cache. Normally, if you call TransactionIdIsInProgress on such a transaction, it determines that the XID is in progress without checking the CLOG and without populating the cache. One way to prime the cache is to explicitly call pg_xact_status() on the XID. Another way is to use a lot of subtransactions, so that the subxid cache in the proc array is overflown, making TransactionIdIsInProgress rely on pg_subtrans and CLOG checks. This has been broken ever since it was introduced in 2008, but the race condition is very hard to hit, especially without synchronous replication. There were a couple of reports of the error starting from summer 2021, but no one was able to find the root cause then. TransactionIdIsKnownCompleted() is now unused. In 'master', remove it, but I left it in place in backbranches in case it's used by extensions. Also change pg_xact_status() to check TransactionIdIsInProgress(). Previously, it only checked the CLOG, and returned "committed" before the transaction was actually made visible to other queries. Note that this also means that you cannot use pg_xact_status() to reproduce the bug anymore, even if the code wasn't fixed. Report and analysis by Konstantin Knizhnik. Patch by Simon Riggs, with the pg_xact_status() change added by me. 2019-01-21Move remaining code from tqual.[ch] to heapam.h / heapam_visibility.c.Andres Freund
Given these routines are heap specific, and that there will be more generic visibility support in via table AM, it makes sense to move the prototypes to heapam.h (routines like HeapTupleSatisfiesVacuum will not be exposed in a generic fashion, because they are too storage specific). Similarly, the code in tqual.c is specific to heap, so moving it into access/heap/ makes sense. Author: Andres Freund Discussion: https://postgr.es/m/20180703070645.wchpu5muyto5n647@alap3.anarazel.de

This makes documentation and error messages match the renaming of "xlog" to "wal" in APIs and file naming.
2017-03-23Track the oldest XID that can be safely looked up in CLOG.Robert Haas
This provides infrastructure for looking up arbitrary, user-supplied XIDs without a risk of scary-looking failures from within the clog module. Normally, the oldest XID that can be safely looked up in CLOG is the same as the oldest XID that can reused without causing wraparound, and the latter is already tracked. However, while truncation is in progress, the values are different, so we must keep track of them separately. Craig Ringer, reviewed by Simon Riggs and by me. 2017-03-17Rename "pg_clog" directory to "pg_xact".Robert Haas
Names containing the letters "log" sometimes confuse users into believing that only non-critical data is present. It is hoped this renaming will discourage ill-considered removals of transaction status data. 2012-06-24Replace XLogRecPtr struct with a 64-bit integer.Heikki Linnakangas
This simplifies code that needs to do arithmetic on XLogRecPtrs. To avoid changing on-disk format of data pages, the LSN on data pages is still stored in the old format. That should keep pg_upgrade happy. However, we have XLogRecPtrs embedded in the control file, and in the structs that are sent over the replication protocol, so this changes breaks compatibility of pg_basebackup and server. I didn't do anything about this in this patch, per discussion on -hackers, the right thing to do would to be to change the replication protocol to be architecture-independent, so that you could use a newer version of pg_receivexlog, for example, against an older server version.

2011-06-21Make the visibility map crash-safe.Robert Haas
This involves two main changes from the previous behavior. First, when we set a bit in the visibility map, emit a new WAL record of type XLOG_HEAP2_VISIBLE. Replay sets the page-level PD_ALL_VISIBLE bit and the visibility map bit. Second, when inserting, updating, or deleting a tuple, we can no longer get away with clearing the visibility map bit after releasing the lock on the corresponding heap page, because an intervening crash might leave the visibility map bit set and the page-level bit clear. Making this work requires a bit of interface refactoring. In passing, a few minor but related cleanups: change the test in visibilitymap_set and visibilitymap_clear to throw an error if the wrong page (or no page) is pinned, rather than silently doing nothing; this case should never occur. Also, remove duplicate definitions of InvalidXLogRecPtr. Patch by me, review by Noah Misch.

2008-10-20Rework subtransaction commit protocol for hot standby.Alvaro Herrera
This patch eliminates the marking of subtransactions as SUBCOMMITTED in pg_clog during their commit; instead they remain in-progress until main transaction commit. At main transaction commit, the commit protocol is atomic-by-page instead of one transaction at a time. To avoid a race condition with some subtransactions appearing committed before others in the case where they span more than one pg_clog page, we conserve the logic that marks them subcommitted before marking the parent committed. 2008-03-26Rename snapmgmt.c/h to snapmgr.c/h, for consistency with other files.Alvaro Herrera
Per complaint from Tom Lane.
2008-03-26Separate snapshot management code from tuple visibility code, create aAlvaro Herrera
snapmgmt.c file for the former. The header files have also been reorganized in three parts: the most basic snapshot definitions are now in a new file snapshot.h, and the also new snapmgmt.h keeps the definitions for snapmgmt.c. tqual.h has been reduced to the bare minimum. This patch is just a first step towards managing live snapshots within a transaction; there is no functionality change. Per my proposal to pgsql-patches on 20080318191940.GB27458@alvh.no-ip.org and subsequent discussion.
2008-03-11Make TransactionIdIsInProgress check transam.c's single-item XID status cacheTom Lane
before it goes groveling through the ProcArray. In situations where the same recently-committed transaction ID is checked repeatedly by tqual.c, this saves a lot of shared-memory searches. And it's cheap enough that it shouldn't hurt noticeably when it doesn't help. Concept and patch by Simon, some minor tweaking and comment-cleanup by Tom.

2007-09-08Replace the former method of determining snapshot xmax --- to wit, callingTom Lane
ReadNewTransactionId from GetSnapshotData --- with a "latestCompletedXid" variable that is updated during transaction commit or abort. Since latestCompletedXid is written only in places that had to lock ProcArrayLock exclusively anyway, and is read only in places that had to lock ProcArrayLock shared anyway, it adds no new locking requirements to the system despite being cluster-wide. Moreover, removing ReadNewTransactionId from snapshot acquisition eliminates the need to take both XidGenLock and ProcArrayLock at the same time. Since XidGenLock is sometimes held across I/O this can be a significant win. Some preliminary benchmarking suggested that this patch has no effect on average throughput but can significantly improve the worst-case transaction times seen in pgbench. Concept by Florian Pflug, implementation by Tom Lane.
2007-08-01Support an optional asynchronous commit mode, in which we don't flush WALTom Lane
before reporting a transaction committed. Data consistency is still guaranteed (unlike setting fsync = off), but a crash may lose the effects of the last few transactions. Patch by Simon, some editorialization by Tom.

RecentXmin (== MyProc->xmin). This ensures that it will be safe to truncate pg_subtrans at RecentGlobalXmin, which should largely eliminate any fear of bloat. Along the way, eliminate SubTransXidsHaveCommonAncestor, which isn't really needed and could not give a trustworthy result anyway under the lookback restriction. In an unrelated but nearby change, #ifdef out GetUndoRecPtr, which has been dead code since 2001 and seems unlikely to ever be resurrected.
