Inheritance trees can include temporary tables if the parent is
permanent, which makes possible the presence of multiple temporary
children from different sessions. Trying to issue a TRUNCATE on the
parent in this scenario causes a failure, so similarly to any other
queries just ignore such cases, which makes TRUNCATE work
transparently.
This makes truncation behave similarly to any other DML query working on
the parent table with queries which need to be issues on children. A
set of isolation tests is added to cover basic cases.

This is an oversight from recent commit b13fd344. While on it, tweak
the previous test with a better name for the renamed primary key.
Detected by buildfarm member prion which forces relation cache release
with -DRELCACHE_FORCE_RELEASE. Back-patch down to 9.4 as the previous
commit.

When a constraint gets renamed, it may have associated with it a target
relation (for example domain constraints don't have one). Not
invalidating the target relation cache when issuing the renaming can
result in issues with subsequent commands that refer to the old
constraint name using the relation cache, causing various failures. One
pattern spotted was using CREATE TABLE LIKE after a constraint
renaming.

The stanza of ExecuteTruncate[Guts] that truncates a target table's toast
relation re-used the loop local variable "rel" to reference the toast rel.
This was safe enough when written, but commit d42358efb added code below
that that supposed "rel" still pointed to the parent table. Therefore,
the stats counter update was applied to the wrong relcache entry (the
toast rel not the user rel); and if we were unlucky and that relcache
entry had been flushed during reindex_relation, very bad things could
ensue.
(I'm surprised that CLOBBER_CACHE_ALWAYS testing hasn't found this.
I'm even more surprised that the problem wasn't detected during the
development of d42358efb; it must not have been tested in any case
with a toast table, as the incorrect stats counts are very obvious.)
To fix, replace use of "rel" in that code branch with a more local
variable. Adjust test cases added by d42358efb so that some of them
use tables with toast tables.

Index DDL cascading on partitioned tables introduced a way for ALTER
TABLE to be called reentrantly. This caused an an important deficiency
in event trigger support to be exposed: on exiting the reentrant call,
the alter table state object was clobbered, causing a crash when the
outer alter table tries to finalize its processing. Fix the crash by
creating a stack of event trigger state objects. There are still ways
to cause things to misbehave (and probably other crashers) with more
elaborate tricks, but at least it now doesn't crash in the obvious
scenario.
Backpatch to 9.5, where DDL deparsing of event triggers was introduced.

If the column being modified is referenced by a foreign key constraint
of another table, ALTER TABLE would open the other table (to re-parse
the constraint's definition) without having first obtained a lock on it.
This was evidently intentional, but that doesn't mean it's really safe.
It's especially not safe in 9.3, which pre-dates use of MVCC scans for
catalog reads, but even in current releases it doesn't seem like a good
idea.
We know we'll need AccessExclusiveLock shortly to drop the obsoleted
constraint, so just get that a little sooner to close the hole.
Per testing with a patch that complains if we open a relation without
holding any lock on it. I don't plan to back-patch that patch, but we
should close the holes it identifies in all supported branches.

When a table ownership is changed, we must apply that also to any owned
sequences. (Otherwise, it would result in a situation that cannot be
restored, because linked sequences must have the same owner as the
table.) But this was previously only applied to regular tables and
materialized views. But it should also apply to at least foreign
tables. This patch removes the relkind check altogether, because it
doesn't save very much and just introduces the possibility of similar
omissions.

There's a project policy against using plain "char buf[BLCKSZ]" local
or static variables as page buffers; preferred style is to palloc or
malloc each buffer to ensure it is MAXALIGN'd. However, that policy's
been ignored in an increasing number of places. We've apparently got
away with it so far, probably because (a) relatively few people use
platforms on which misalignment causes core dumps and/or (b) the
variables chance to be sufficiently aligned anyway. But this is not
something to rely on. Moreover, even if we don't get a core dump,
we might be paying a lot of cycles for misaligned accesses.
To fix, invent new union types PGAlignedBlock and PGAlignedXLogBlock
that the compiler must allocate with sufficient alignment, and use
those in place of plain char arrays.
I used these types even for variables where there's no risk of a
misaligned access, since ensuring proper alignment should make
kernel data transfers faster. I also changed some places where
we had been palloc'ing short-lived buffers, for coding style
uniformity and to save palloc/pfree overhead.
Since this seems to be a live portability hazard (despite the lack
of field reports), back-patch to all supported versions.

While monitoring the code, a couple of issues related to string
translation has showed up:
- Some routines for auto-updatable views return an error string, which
sometimes missed the shot. A comment regarding string translation is
added for each routine to help with future features.
- GSSAPI authentication missed two translations.
- vacuumdb handles non-translated strings.

For no apparent reason, this function was using a 16bit-wide inhseqno
value, rather than the correct 32 bit width which is what is stored in
the pg_inherits catalog. This becomes evident if you try to create a
table with more than 65535 parents, because this error appears:
ERROR: duplicate key value violates unique constraint «pg_inherits_relid_seqno_index»
DETAIL: Key (inhrelid, inhseqno)=(329371, 0) already exists.
Needless to say, having so many parents is an uncommon situations, which
explains why this error has never been reported despite being having
been introduced with the Postgres95 1.01 sources in commit d31084e9d111:

find_composite_type_dependencies correctly found columns that are of
the specified type, and columns that are of arrays of that type, but
not columns that are domains or ranges over the given type, its array
type, etc. The most general way to handle this seems to be to assume
that any type that is directly dependent on the specified type can be
treated as a container type, and processed recursively (allowing us
to handle nested cases such as ranges over domains over arrays ...).
Since a type's array type already has such a dependency, we can drop
the existing special case for the array type.
The very similar logic in get_rels_with_domain was likewise a few
bricks shy of a load, as it supposed that a directly dependent type
could *only* be a sub-domain. This is already wrong for ranges over
domains, and it'll someday be wrong for arrays over domains.
Add test cases illustrating the problems, and back-patch to all
supported branches.

The CommentStmt made by RebuildConstraintComment() has to pstrdup the
relation name, else it will contain a dangling pointer after that
relcache entry is flushed. (I'm less sure that pstrdup'ing conname
is necessary, but let's be safe.) Failure to do this leads to weird
errors or crashes, as reported by Marko Elezovic.
Bug introduced by commit e42375fc8, so back-patch to 9.5 as that was.

Currently, trying to validate a NO INHERIT constraint on the parent will
search for the constraint in child tables (where it is not supposed to
exist), wrongly causing a "constraint does not exist" error.

If inherited tables don't have exactly the same schema, the USING clause
in an ALTER TABLE / SET DATA TYPE misbehaves when applied to the
children tables since commit 9550e8348b79. Starting with that commit,
the attribute numbers in the USING expression are fixed during parse
analysis. This can lead to bogus errors being reported during
execution, such as:
ERROR: attribute 2 has wrong type
DETAIL: Table has type smallint, but query expects integer.
Since it wouldn't do to revert to the original coding, we now apply a
transformation to map the attribute numbers to the correct ones for each
child.

This fixes problems where a plan must change but fails to do so,
as seen in a bug report from Rajkumar Raghuwanshi.
For ALTER FOREIGN TABLE OPTIONS, do this through the standard method of
forcing a relcache flush on the table. For ALTER FOREIGN DATA WRAPPER
and ALTER SERVER, just flush the whole plan cache on any change in
pg_foreign_data_wrapper or pg_foreign_server. That matches the way
we handle some other low-probability cases such as opclass changes, and
it's unclear that the case arises often enough to be worth working harder.
Besides, that gives a patch that is simple enough to back-patch with
confidence.
Back-patch to 9.3. In principle we could apply the code change to 9.2 as
well, but (a) we lack postgres_fdw to test it with, (b) it's doubtful that
anyone is doing anything exciting enough with FDWs that far back to need
this desperately, and (c) the patch doesn't apply cleanly.

Inheritance operations must treat the OID column, if any, much like
regular user columns. But MergeAttributesIntoExisting() neglected to
do that, leading to weird results after a table with OIDs is associated
to a parent with OIDs via ALTER TABLE ... INHERIT.
Report and patch by Amit Langote, reviewed by Ashutosh Bapat, some
adjustments by me. It's been broken all along, so back-patch to
all supported branches.

When dropping a foreign key constraint with ALTER TABLE DROP CONSTRAINT,
we refuse the drop if there are any pending trigger events on the named
table; this ensures that we won't remove the pg_trigger row that will be
consulted by those events. But we should make the same check for the
referenced relation, else we might remove a due-to-be-referenced pg_trigger
row for that relation too, resulting in "could not find trigger NNN" or
"relation NNN has no triggers" errors at commit. Per bug #14431 from

The code to change the deferrability properties of a foreign-key constraint
updated all the associated triggers to match; but a moment's examination of
the code that creates those triggers in the first place shows that only
some of them should track the constraint's deferrability properties. This
leads to odd failures in subsequent exercise of the foreign key, as the
triggers are fired at the wrong times. Fix that, and add a regression test
comparing the trigger properties produced by ALTER CONSTRAINT with those
you get by creating the constraint as-intended to begin with.

Historically, we've allowed users to add a CHECK constraint to a child
table and then add an identical CHECK constraint to the parent. This
results in "merging" the two constraints so that the pre-existing
child constraint ends up with both conislocal = true and coninhcount > 0.
However, if you tried to do it in the other order, you got a duplicate
constraint error. This is problematic for pg_dump, which needs to issue
separated ADD CONSTRAINT commands in some cases, but has no good way to
ensure that the constraints will be added in the required order.
And it's more than a bit arbitrary, too. The goal of complaining about
duplicated ADD CONSTRAINT commands can be served if we reject the case of
adding a constraint when the existing one already has conislocal = true;
but if it has conislocal = false, let's just make the ADD CONSTRAINT set
conislocal = true. In this way, either order of adding the constraints
has the same end result.
Another problem was that the code allowed creation of a parent constraint
marked convalidated that is merged with a child constraint that is
!convalidated. In this case, an inheritance scan of the parent table could
emit some rows violating the constraint condition, which would be an
unexpected result given the marking of the parent constraint as validated.
Hence, forbid merging of constraints in this case. (Note: valid child and
not-valid parent seems fine, so continue to allow that.)
Per report from Benedikt Grundmann. Back-patch to 9.2 where we introduced
possibly-not-valid check constraints. The second bug obviously doesn't
apply before that, and I think the first doesn't either, because pg_dump
only gets into this situation when dealing with not-valid constraints.

Careless coding added by commit 07cacba983ef79be could result in a crash
or a bizarre error message if someone tried to select an index on the
OID column as the replica identity index for a table. Back-patch to 9.4
where the feature was introduced.

This is necessary so that REASSIGN OWNED does the right thing with
composite types, to wit, that it also alters ownership of the type's
pg_class entry -- previously, the pg_class entry remained owned by the
original user, which caused later other failures such as the new owner's
inability to use ALTER TYPE to rename an attribute of the affected
composite. Also, if the original owner is later dropped, the pg_class
entry becomes owned by a non-existant user which is bogus.
To fix, create a new routine AlterTypeOwner_oid which knows whether to
pass the request to ATExecChangeOwner or deal with it directly, and use
that in shdepReassignOwner rather than calling AlterTypeOwnerInternal
directly. AlterTypeOwnerInternal is now simpler in that it only
modifies the pg_type entry and recurses to handle a possible array type;
higher-level tasks are handled by either AlterTypeOwner directly or
AlterTypeOwner_oid.
I took the opportunity to add a few more objects to the test rig for
REASSIGN OWNED, so that more cases are exercised. Additional ones could
be added for superuser-only-ownable objects (such as FDWs and event
triggers) but I didn't want to push my luck by adding a new superuser to
the tests on a backpatchable bug fix.

(I would back-patch this all the way back, except that it doesn't apply
cleanly in 9.4 and earlier because 59367fdf9 wasn't backpatched. If we
decide that we need this in earlier branches too, we should backpatch

Changing the tablespace of an unlogged relation did not WAL log the
creation and content of the init fork. Thus, after a standby is
promoted, unlogged relation cannot be accessed anymore, with errors
like:
ERROR: 58P01: could not open file "pg_tblspc/...": No such file or directory
Additionally the init fork was not synced to disk, independent of the
configured wal_level, a relatively small durability risk.
Investigation of that problem also brought to light that, even for
permanent relations, the creation of !main forks was not WAL logged,
i.e. no XLOG_SMGR_CREATE record were emitted. That mostly turns out not
to be a problem, because these files were created when the actual
relation data is copied; nonexistent files are not treated as an error
condition during replay. But that doesn't work for empty files, and
generally feels a bit haphazard. Luckily, outside init and main forks,
empty forks don't occur often or are not a problem.
Add the required WAL logging and syncing to disk.

The previous way of reconstructing check constraints was to do a separate
"ALTER TABLE ONLY tab ADD CONSTRAINT" for each table in an inheritance
hierarchy. However, that way has no hope of reconstructing the check
constraints' own inheritance properties correctly, as pointed out in
bug #13779 from Jan Dirk Zijlstra. What we should do instead is to do
a regular "ALTER TABLE", allowing recursion, at the topmost table that
has a particular constraint, and then suppress the work queue entries
for inherited instances of the constraint.
Annoyingly, we'd tried to fix this behavior before, in commit 5ed6546cf,
but we failed to notice that it wasn't reconstructing the pg_constraint
field values correctly.
As long as I'm touching pg_get_constraintdef_worker anyway, tweak it to
always schema-qualify the target table name; this seems like useful backup
to the protections installed by commit 5f173040.
In HEAD/9.5, get rid of get_constraint_relation_oids, which is now unused.
(I could alternatively have modified it to also return conislocal, but that
seemed like a pretty single-purpose API, so let's not pretend it has some
other use.) It's unused in the back branches as well, but I left it in
place just in case some third-party code has decided to use it.
In HEAD/9.5, also rename pg_get_constraintdef_string to
pg_get_constraintdef_command, as the previous name did nothing to explain
what that entry point did differently from others (and its comment was
equally useless). Again, that change doesn't seem like material for
back-patching.
I did a bit of re-pgindenting in tablecmds.c in HEAD/9.5, as well.
Otherwise, back-patch to all supported branches.

To allow users to force RLS to always be applied, even for table owners,
add ALTER TABLE .. FORCE ROW LEVEL SECURITY.
row_security=off overrides FORCE ROW LEVEL SECURITY, to ensure pg_dump
output is complete (by default).
Also add SECURITY_NOFORCE_RLS context to avoid data corruption when
ALTER TABLE .. FORCE ROW SECURITY is being used. The
SECURITY_NOFORCE_RLS security context is used only during referential
integrity checks and is only considered in check_enable_rls() after we
have already checked that the current user is the owner of the relation
(which should always be the case during referential integrity checks).
Back-patch to 9.5 where RLS was added.

When a column's datatype is changed, ATExecAlterColumnType() rebuilds all
the affected indexes and constraints, and the comments from the old
indexes/constraints were not carried over.
To fix, create a synthetic COMMENT ON command in the work queue, to re-add
any comments on constraints. For indexes, there's a comment field in
IndexStmt that is used.
This fixes bug #13126, reported by Kirill Simonov. Original patch by
Michael Paquier, reviewed by Petr Jelinek and me. This bug is present in
all versions, but only backpatch to 9.5. Given how minor the issue is, it
doesn't seem worth the work and risk to backpatch further than that.

The code in ATPostAlterTypeParse was very deeply indented, mostly because
there were two nested switch-case statements, which add a lot of
indentation. Use if-else blocks instead, to make the code less indented
and more readable.
This is in preparation for next patch that makes some actualy changes to
the function. These cosmetic parts have been separated to make it easier
to see the real changes in the other patch.

We already tried to improve this once, but the "improved" text was rather
off-target if you had provided a USING clause. Also, it seems helpful
to provide the exact text of a suggested USING clause, so users can just
copy-and-paste it when needed. Per complaint from Keith Rarick and a
suggestion from Merlin Moncure.

Use "a" and "an" correctly, mostly in comments. Two error messages were
also fixed (they were just elogs, so no translation work required). Two
function comments in pg_proc.h were also fixed. Etsuro Fujita reported one
of these, but I found a lot more with grep.
Also fix a few other typos spotted while grepping for the a/an typos.
For example, "consists out of ..." -> "consists of ...". Plus a "though"/
"through" mixup reported by Euler Taveira.
Many of these typos were in old code, which would be nice to backpatch to
make future backpatching easier. But much of the code was new, and I didn't
feel like crafting separate patches for each branch. So no backpatching.

This feature lets user code inspect and take action on DDL events.
Whenever a ddl_command_end event trigger is installed, DDL actions
executed are saved to a list which can be inspected during execution of
a function attached to ddl_command_end.
The set-returning function pg_event_trigger_ddl_commands can be used to
list actions so captured; it returns data about the type of command
executed, as well as the affected object. This is sufficient for many
uses of this feature. For the cases where it is not, we also provide a
"command" column of a new pseudo-type pg_ddl_command, which is a
pointer to a C structure that can be accessed by C code. The struct
contains all the info necessary to completely inspect and even
reconstruct the executed command.
There is no actual deparse code here; that's expected to come later.
What we have is enough infrastructure that the deparsing can be done in
an external extension. The intention is that we will add some deparsing
code in a later release, as an in-core extension.
A new test module is included. It's probably insufficient as is, but it
should be sufficient as a starting point for a more complete and
future-proof approach.

When altering the deferredness state of a foreign key constraint, we
correctly updated the catalogs and then invalidated the relcache state for
the target relation ... but that's not the only relation with relevant
triggers. Must invalidate the other table as well, or the state change
fails to take effect promptly for operations triggered on the other table.

In passing, reorganize regression test case for this feature so that it
isn't randomly injected into the middle of an unrelated test sequence.

pg_dump has historically assumed that default_with_oids affects only plain
tables and not other relkinds. Conceivably we could make it apply to some
newly invented relkind if we did so from the get-go, but changing the
behavior for existing object types will break existing dump scripts.
Add code comments warning about this interaction.
Also, make sure that default_with_oids doesn't cause parse_utilcmd.c to
think that CREATE FOREIGN TABLE will create an OID column. I think this is
only a latent bug right now, since we don't allow UNIQUE/PKEY constraints
in CREATE FOREIGN TABLE, but it's better to be consistent and future-proof.

This lets later stages have access to the transformed expression; in
particular it allows DDL-deparsing code during event triggers to pass
the transformed expression to ruleutils.c, so that the complete command
can be deparsed.
This shuffles the timing of the transform calls a bit: previously,
nothing was transformed during parse analysis, and only the
RELKIND_RELATION case was being handled during execution. After this
patch, all expressions are transformed during parse analysis (including
those for relkinds other than RELATION), and the error for other
relation kinds is thrown only during execution. So we do more work than
before to reject some bogus cases. That seems acceptable.

Since commit a2e35b53c39b2a, most CREATE and ALTER commands return the
ObjectAddress of the affected object. This is useful for event triggers
to try to figure out exactly what happened. This patch extends this
idea a bit further to cover ALTER TABLE as well: an auxiliary
ObjectAddress is returned for each of several subcommands of ALTER
TABLE. This makes it possible to decode with precision what happened
during execution of any ALTER TABLE command; for instance, which
constraint was added by ALTER TABLE ADD CONSTRAINT, or which parent got
dropped from the parents list by ALTER TABLE NO INHERIT.
As with the previous patch, there is no immediate user-visible change
here.
This is all really just continuing what c504513f83a9ee8 started.

Foreign tables can now be inheritance children, or parents. Much of the
system was already ready for this, but we had to fix a few things of
course, mostly in the area of planner and executor handling of row locks.
As side effects of this, allow foreign tables to have NOT VALID CHECK
constraints (and hence to accept ALTER ... VALIDATE CONSTRAINT), and to
accept ALTER SET STORAGE and ALTER SET WITH/WITHOUT OIDS. Continuing to
disallow these things would've required bizarre and inconsistent special
cases in inheritance behavior. Since foreign tables don't enforce CHECK
constraints anyway, a NOT VALID one is a complete no-op, but that doesn't
mean we shouldn't allow it. And it's possible that some FDWs might have
use for SET STORAGE or SET WITH OIDS, though doubtless they will be no-ops
for most.
An additional change in support of this is that when a ModifyTable node
has multiple target tables, they will all now be explicitly identified
in EXPLAIN output, for example:

Commands such as ALTER USER, ALTER GROUP, ALTER ROLE, GRANT, and the
various ALTER OBJECT / OWNER TO, as well as ad-hoc clauses related to
roles such as the AUTHORIZATION clause of CREATE SCHEMA, the FOR clause
of CREATE USER MAPPING, and the FOR ROLE clause of ALTER DEFAULT
PRIVILEGES can now take the keywords CURRENT_USER and SESSION_USER as
user specifiers in place of an explicit user name.
This commit also fixes some quite ugly handling of special standards-
mandated syntax in CREATE USER MAPPING, which in particular would fail
to work in presence of a role named "current_user".
The special role specifiers PUBLIC and NONE also have more consistent
handling now.
Also take the opportunity to add location tracking to user specifiers.

The changed routines are mostly those that can be directly called by
ProcessUtilitySlow; the intention is to make the affected object
information more precise, in support for future event trigger changes.
Originally it was envisioned that the OID of the affected object would
be enough, and in most cases that is correct, but upon actually
implementing the event trigger changes it turned out that ObjectAddress
is more widely useful.
Additionally, some command execution routines grew an output argument
that's an object address which provides further info about the executed
command. To wit:
* for ALTER DOMAIN / ADD CONSTRAINT, it corresponds to the address of
the new constraint
* for ALTER OBJECT / SET SCHEMA, it corresponds to the address of the
schema that originally contained the object.
* for ALTER EXTENSION {ADD, DROP} OBJECT, it corresponds to the address
of the object added to or dropped from the extension.
There's no user-visible change in this commit, and no functional change
either.
