2002-11-11Code review for ON COMMIT patch. Make the actual on-commit action happenTom Lane
before commit, not after :-( --- the original coding is not only unsafe if an error occurs while it's processing, but it generates an invalid sequence of WAL entries. Resurrect 7.2 logic for deleting items when no longer needed. Use an enum instead of random macros. Editorialize on names used for routines and constants. Teach backend/nodes routines about new field in CreateTable struct. Add a regression test.
2002-09-22Replace pg_attribute.attisinherited with attislocal and attinhcountTom Lane
columns, to allow more correct behavior in multiple-inheritance cases. Patch by Alvaro Herrera, review by Tom Lane.
2002-09-04pgindent run.Bruce Momjian
2002-09-02Department of second thoughts: make checks for replacing a view slightlyTom Lane
more flexible, and improve the error reporting. Also, add documentation for REPLACE RULE/VIEW.
2002-09-02CREATE OR REPLACE VIEW, CREATE OR REPLACE RULE.Tom Lane
Gavin Sherry, Neil Conway, and Tom Lane all got their hands dirty on this one ...
2002-08-30Add attisinherited column to pg_attribute; use it to guard againstTom Lane
column additions, deletions, and renames that would let a child table get out of sync with its parent. Patch by Alvaro Herrera, with some kibitzing by Tom Lane.
2002-07-16Add more dependency insertions --- this completes the basic pg_dependTom Lane
functionality. Of note: dropping a table that has a SERIAL column defined now drops the associated sequence automatically.
2002-07-12Second phase of committing Rod Taylor's pg_depend/pg_constraint patch.Tom Lane
pg_relcheck is gone; CHECK, UNIQUE, PRIMARY KEY, and FOREIGN KEY constraints all have real live entries in pg_constraint. pg_depend exists, and RESTRICT/CASCADE options work on most kinds of DROP; however, pg_depend is not yet very well populated with dependencies. (Most of the ones that are present at this point just replace formerly hardwired associations, such as the implicit drop of a relation's pg_type entry when the relation is dropped.) Need to add more logic to create dependency entries, improve pg_dump to dump constraints in place of indexes and triggers, and add some regression tests.
2002-07-01First phase of applying Rod Taylor's pg_depend patch. This just addsTom Lane
RESTRICT/CASCADE syntax to the DROP commands that need it, and propagates the behavioral option through the parser to the routines that execute drops. Doesn't do anything useful yet, but I figured I'd commit these changes so I could get out of the parser area while working on the rest.
2002-06-20Update copyright to 2002.Bruce Momjian
2002-04-19Change naming rule for ON SELECT rules of views: they're all justTom Lane
_RETURN now, since there's no need to keep 'em unique anymore.
2002-04-15The contents of command.c, creatinh.c, define.c, remove.c and rename.cTom Lane
have been divided according to the type of object manipulated - so ALTER TABLE code is in tablecmds.c, aggregate commands in aggregatecmds.c and so on. A few common support routines remain in define.c (prototypes in src/include/commands/defrem.h). No code has been changed except for includes to reflect the new files. The prototypes for aggregatecmds.c, functioncmds.c, operatorcmds.c, and typecmds.c remain in src/include/commands/defrem.h. From John Gray <jgray@azuli.co.uk>
2002-03-29pg_type has a typnamespace column; system now supports creating typesTom Lane
in different namespaces. Also, cleanup work on relation namespace support: drop, alter, rename commands work for tables in non-default namespaces.
2002-03-22A little further progress on schemas: push down RangeVars intoTom Lane
addRangeTableEntry calls. Remove relname field from RTEs, since it will no longer be a useful unique identifier of relations; we want to encourage people to rely on the relation OID instead. Further work on dumping qual expressions in EXPLAIN, too.
2002-03-21First phase of SCHEMA changes, concentrating on fixing the grammar andTom Lane
the parsetree representation. As yet we don't *do* anything with schema names, just drop 'em on the floor; but you can enter schema-compatible command syntax, and there's even a primitive CREATE SCHEMA command. No doc updates yet, except to note that you can now extract a field from a function-returning-row's result with (foo(...)).fieldname.
2001-10-25pgindent run on all C files. Java run to follow. initdb/regressionBruce Momjian
tests pass.
2001-08-16Sequences are now based on int8, not int4, arithmetic. SERIAL pseudo-typeTom Lane
has an alias SERIAL4 and a sister SERIAL8. SERIAL8 is just the same except the created column is type int8 not int4. initdb forced. Note this also breaks any chance of pg_upgrade from 7.1, unless we hack up pg_upgrade to drop and recreate sequences. (Which is not out of the question, but I don't wanna do it.)
2001-08-12Make ALTER TABLE RENAME on a view rename the view's on-select rule too.Tom Lane
Needed to keep pg_dump from getting confused.
2001-08-10Make OIDs optional, per discussions in pghackers. WITH OIDS is still theTom Lane
default, but OIDS are removed from many system catalogs that don't need them. Some interesting side effects: TOAST pointers are 20 bytes not 32 now; pg_description has a three-column key instead of one. Bugs fixed in passing: BINARY cursors work again; pg_class.relhaspkey has some usefulness; pg_dump dumps comments on indexes, rules, and triggers in a valid order. initdb forced.

2001-01-24Change Copyright from PostgreSQL, Inc to PostgreSQL Global Development Group.Bruce Momjian
2001-01-03MakeRetrieveViewRuleName was scribbling on memory that didn't belongTom Lane
to it. Bad dog.
2000-12-21Fix longstanding bug with VIEW using BETWEEN: OffsetVarNodes would getTom Lane
applied to the duplicated subtree twice. Probably someday we should fix the parser not to generate multiple links to the same subtree, but for now a quick copyObject() is the path of least resistance.
2000-10-26Clean up gcc warnings in MULTIBYTE mode.Tom Lane
2000-09-29Subselects in FROM clause, per ISO syntax: FROM (SELECT ...) [AS] alias.Tom Lane
(Don't forget that an alias is required.) Views reimplemented as expanding to subselect-in-FROM. Grouping, aggregates, DISTINCT in views actually work now (he says optimistically). No UNION support in subselects/views yet, but I have some ideas about that. Rule-related permissions checking moved out of rewriter and into executor. INITDB REQUIRED!
2000-09-12First cut at full support for OUTER JOINs. There are still a few looseTom Lane
ends to clean up (see my message of same date to pghackers), but mostly it works. INITDB REQUIRED!
2000-09-12This patch implements a different "relkind"Bruce Momjian
for views. Views are now have a "relkind" of RELKIND_VIEW instead of RELKIND_RELATION. Also, views no longer have actual heap storage files. The following changes were made 1. CREATE VIEW sets the new relkind 2. The executor complains if a DELETE or INSERT references a view. 3. DROP RULE complains if an attempt is made to delete a view SELECT rule. 4. CREATE RULE "_RETmytable" AS ON SELECT TO mytable DO INSTEAD ... 1. checks to make sure mytable is empty. 2. sets the relkind to RELKIND_VIEW. 3. deletes the heap storage files. 5. LOCK myview is not allowed. :) 6. the regression test type_sanity was changed to account for the new relkind value. 7. CREATE INDEX ON myview ... is not allowed. 8. VACUUM myview is not allowed. VACUUM automatically skips views when do the entire database. 9. TRUNCATE myview is not allowed. THINGS LEFT TO THINK ABOUT o pg_views o pg_dump o pgsql (\d \dv) o Do we really want to be able to inherit from views? o Is 'DROP TABLE myview' OK? -- Mark Hollomon
2000-09-12O.K. -Bruce Momjian
Here's the multibyte aware version of my patch to fix the truncation of the rulename autogenerated during a CREATE VIEW. I've modified all the places in the backend that want to construct the rulename to use the MakeRetrieveViewRuleName(), where I put the #ifdef MULTIBYTE, so that's the only place that knows how to construct a view rulename. Except pg_dump, where I replicated the code, since it's a standalone binary. The only effect the enduser will see is that views with names len(name) > NAMEDATALEN-4 will fail to be created, if the derived rulename clases with an existing rule: i.e. the user is trying to create two views with long names whose first difference is past NAMEDATALEN-4 (but before NAMEDATALEN: that'll error out after the viewname truncation.) In no case will the user get left with a table without a view rule, as the current code does. Ross Reedstrom
2000-07-04Make toast-table creation and deletion work somewhat reliably.Tom Lane
Don't go through pg_exec_query_dest(), but directly to the execution routines. Also, extend parameter lists so that there's no need to change the global setting of allowSystemTableMods, a hack that was certain to cause trouble in the event of any error.
2000-06-30RemoveView was doing things the hard way...Tom Lane
2000-06-12Rename rule CURRENT to OLD in source tree. Add mapping for backwardBruce Momjian
compatiblity with old rules.
2000-02-15Carry column aliases from the parser frontend. Enables queries likeThomas G. Lockhart
SELECT a FROM t1 tx (a); Allow join syntax, including queries like SELECT * FROM t1 NATURAL JOIN t2; Update RTE structure to hold column aliases in an Attr structure.

1999-12-10Rename several destroy* functions/tags to drop*.Bruce Momjian
1999-10-07Fix planner and rewriter to follow SQL semantics for tables that areTom Lane
mentioned in FROM but not elsewhere in the query: such tables should be joined over anyway. Aside from being more standards-compliant, this allows removal of some very ugly hacks for COUNT(*) processing. Also, allow HAVING clause without aggregate functions, since SQL does. Clean up CREATE RULE statement-list syntax the same way Bruce just fixed the main stmtmulti production. CAUTION: addition of a field to RangeTblEntry nodes breaks stored rules; you will have to initdb if you have any rules.
1999-10-03Reimplement parsing and storage of default expressions and constraintTom Lane
expressions in CREATE TABLE. There is no longer an emasculated expression syntax for these things; it's full a_expr for constraints, and b_expr for defaults (unfortunately the fact that NOT NULL is a part of the column constraint syntax causes a shift/reduce conflict if you try a_expr. Oh well --- at least parenthesized boolean expressions work now). Also, stored expression for a column default is not pre-coerced to the column type; we rely on transformInsertStatement to do that when the default is actually used. This means "f1 datetime default 'now'" behaves the way people usually expect it to. BTW, all the support code is now there to implement ALTER TABLE ADD CONSTRAINT and ALTER TABLE ADD COLUMN with a default value. I didn't actually teach ALTER TABLE to call it, but it wouldn't be much work.

1998-12-14more cleanups...of note, appendStringInfo now performs like sprintf(),Marc G. Fournier
where you state a format and arguments. the old behavior required each appendStringInfo to have to have a sprintf() before it if any formatting was required. Also shortened several instances where there were multiple appendStringInfo() calls in a row, doing nothing more then adding one more word to the String, instead of doing them all in one call.

1998-10-21The patch does 2 things:Bruce Momjian
Fixes a bug in the rule system that caused a crashing backend when a join-view with calculated column is used in subselect. Modifies EXPLAIN to explain rewritten queries instead of the plain SeqScan on a view. Rules can produce very deep MORE Jan.
