2004-02-10Centralize implementation of delay code by creating a pg_usleep()Tom Lane
subroutine in src/port/pgsleep.c. Remove platform dependencies from miscadmin.h and put them in port.h where they belong. Extend recent vacuum cost-based-delay patch to apply to VACUUM FULL, ANALYZE, and non-btree index vacuuming. By the way, where is the documentation for the cost-based-delay patch?
2004-02-08Win32 signals cleanup. Patch by Magnus Hagander, with input from ClaudioNeil Conway
Natoli and Bruce Momjian (and some cosmetic fixes from Neil Conway). Changes: - remove duplicate signal definitions from pqsignal.h - replace pqkill() with kill() and redefine kill() in Win32 - use ereport() in place of fprintf() in some error handling in pqsignal.c - export pg_queue_signal() and make use of it where necessary - add a console control handler for Ctrl-C and similar handling on Win32 - do WaitForSingleObjectEx() in CHECK_FOR_INTERRUPTS() on Win32; query cancelling should now work on Win32 - various other fixes and cleanups

2004-02-03Rename SortMem and VacuumMem to work_mem and maintenance_work_mem.Tom Lane
Make btree index creation and initial validation of foreign-key constraints use maintenance_work_mem rather than work_mem as their memory limit. Add some code to guc.c to allow these variables to be referenced by their old names in SHOW and SET commands, for backwards compatibility.
2004-01-30Remove sleep() and use single PG_SLEEP call for Win32 signal handlingBruce Momjian
and consistency. Change PG_USLEEP to use SleepEx() for signal interuptability.
2004-01-26[all] Removed call to getppid in SendPostmasterSignal, replacing with aBruce Momjian
PostmasterPid variable, which gets set (early) in PostmasterMain getppid would not be the postmaster? [fork/exec] Implements processCancelRequest by keeping an array of pid/cancel_key structs in shared mem [fork/exec] Moves AttachSharedMemoryAndSemaphores call for backends into SubPostmasterMain [win32] Implements reaper/waitpid by keeping an arrays of children pids, handles in postmaster local mem - this item is largely untested, for reasons which should be obvious, but appears sound [win32/all] Added extern for pgpipe in Win32 case, and changed the second pipe call (which seems to have been missed earlier) to pgpipe [win32] #define'd ftruncate to chsize in the Win32 case [win32] PG_USLEEP for Win32 has a misplaced paren. Fixed. [win32] DLLIMPORT handling for MingW case Claudio Natoli

2004-01-22Remove ExpandDatabasePath(), which is unused and must have been so sinceTom Lane
7.1, because the path interpretation it embodies has been wrong since 7.1.

2003-12-20In my mind there were two categories of open issuesBruce Momjian
a) ones that are 100% backward (such as the comment about outputting this format) and b) ones that aren't (such as deprecating the current postgresql shorthand of '1Y1M'::interval = 1 year 1 minute in favor of the ISO-8601 'P1Y1M'::interval = 1 year 1 month. Attached is a patch that addressed all the discussed issues that did not break backward compatability, including the ability to output ISO-8601 compliant intervals by setting datestyle to iso8601basic. Interval values can now be written as ISO 8601 time intervals, using the "Format with time-unit designators". This format always starts with the character 'P', followed by a string of values followed by single character time-unit designators. A 'T' separates the date and time parts of the interval. Ron Mayer

2003-09-24Repair some REINDEX problems per recent discussions. The relcache isTom Lane
now able to cope with assigning new relfilenode values to nailed-in-cache indexes, so they can be reindexed using the fully crash-safe method. This leaves only shared system indexes as special cases. Remove the 'index deactivation' code, since it provides no useful protection in the shared- index case. Require reindexing of shared indexes to be done in standalone mode, but remove other restrictions on REINDEX. -P (IgnoreSystemIndexes) now prevents using indexes for lookups, but does not disable index updates. It is therefore safe to allow from PGOPTIONS. Upshot: reindexing system catalogs can be done without a standalone backend for all cases except shared catalogs.
2003-08-26Mop-up for previous change to determine default shared_buffers andTom Lane
max_connections at initdb time. Get rid of DEF_NBUFFERS and DEF_MAXBACKENDS macros, which aren't doing anything useful anymore, and put more likely defaults into postgresql.conf.sample.
2003-08-04Remove --enable-recode feature, since it's been broken by IPv6 changes,Tom Lane
and seems to have too few users to justify maintaining.

2003-07-29Apply (a somewhat revised version of) Greg Mullane's patch to eliminateTom Lane
heuristic determination of day vs month in date/time input. Add the ability to specify that input is interpreted as yy-mm-dd order (which formerly worked, but only for yy greater than 31). DateStyle's input component now has the preferred spellings DMY, MDY, or YMD; the older keywords European and US are now aliases for the first two of these. Per recent discussions on pgsql-general.

2003-07-17Make EXTRACT(TIMEZONE) and SET/SHOW TIMEZONE follow the SQL conventionTom Lane
for the sign of timezone offsets, ie, positive is east from UTC. These were previously out of step with other operations that accept or show timezones, such as I/O of timestamptz values.

2003-05-28Fix things so that an error occuring during standalone-backend processingTom Lane
in initdb will result in exit(1), allowing the initdb script to realize that there's something wrong.
2003-05-28In bootstrap and standalone-backend modes, do not sort LOG elevel outTom Lane
of order; the 'server log' output is actually client output in these scenarios and we ought to treat elevels the same way as in the client case. This allows initdb to not send backend stderr to /dev/null anymore, which makes it much more likely that people will notice problems during initdb.

But these are only > arguments that it might not *always* be a prudent thing to do, not that > we shouldn't give the DBA the tool to do it if he wants. So fire away. Here is a patch for the above, including a documentation update. It creates a new GUC variable "preload_libraries", that accepts a list in the form: preload_libraries = '$libdir/mylib1:initfunc,$libdir/mylib2' If ":initfunc" is omitted or not found, no initialization function is executed, but the library is still preloaded. If "$libdir/mylib" isn't found, the postmaster refuses to start. In my testing with PL/R, it reduces the first call to a PL/R function (after connecting) from almost 2 seconds, down to about 8 ms. Joe Conway
2003-02-22Simplify timezone-handling code per proposal to pghackers: get rid ofTom Lane
setting timezone-related variables during transaction start. They were not used anyway in platforms that HAVE_TM_ZONE or HAVE_INT_TIMEZONE, which it appears is *all* the platforms we are currently supporting. For platforms that have neither, we now only support UTC or numeric- offset-from-UTC timezones.
2003-01-09Move new typedef AclId into c.h, so as to avoid cluttering namespaceTom Lane

2002-09-05Assorted fixes for Cygwin:Peter Eisentraut
Eliminate the mysterious games that the Cygwin build plays with the linker flag variables. DLLLIBS is gone, use SHLIB_LINK like everyone else. Detect cygipc in configure, after the linker flags are set up, otherwise configure might not work at all. Make sure everything is covered by make clean. Fix the build of the new conversion procedure modules. Add new DLLIMPORT markers where required. Finally, the compiler complains if we use an explicit -I/usr/local/include, so don't do that. Curiously, -L/usr/local/lib is still necessary.

2002-09-02Remove sys/types.h in files that include postgres.h, and hence c.h,Bruce Momjian
because c.h has sys/types.h.
2002-08-29This patch reserves the last superuser_reserved_connections slots forBruce Momjian
connections by the superuser only. This patch replaces the last patch I sent a couple of days ago. It closes a connection that has not been authorised by a superuser if it would leave less than the GUC variable ReservedBackends (superuser_reserved_connections in postgres.conf) backend process slots free in the SISeg. This differs to the first patch which only reserved the last ReservedBackends slots in the procState array. This has made the free slot test more expensive due to the use of a lock. After thinking about a comment on the first patch I've also made it a fatal error if the number of reserved slots is not less than the maximum number of connections. Nigel J. Andrews

2002-05-17Merge the last few variable.c configuration variables into the genericTom Lane
GUC support. It's now possible to set datestyle, timezone, and client_encoding from postgresql.conf and per-database or per-user settings. Also, implement rollback of SET commands that occur in a transaction that later fails. Create a SET LOCAL var = value syntax that sets the variable only for the duration of the current transaction. All per previous discussions in pghackers.
