9 dayss390/pfault: Fix virtual vs physical address confusionAlexander Gordeev
When Linux is running as guest, runs a user space process and the user space process accesses a page that the host has paged out, the guest gets a pfault interrupt and schedules a different process. Without this mechanism the host would have to suspend the whole virtual CPU until the page has been paged in. To setup the pfault interrupt the real address of parameter list should be passed to DIAGNOSE 0x258, but a virtual address is passed instead. That has a performance impact, since the pfault setup never succeeds, the interrupt is never delivered to a guest and the whole virtual CPU is suspended as result. This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) This however was a lot of code (~3K lines) in order to support KVM, and also blocked several features. The biggest advantages is that the page size of userspace is completely independent of the page size used by the guest: userspace can mix normal pages, THPs and hugetlbfs as it sees fit, and in fact transparent hugepages were not possible before. It's also now possible to have nested guests and guests with huge pages running on the same host - Maintainership change for s390 vfio-pci - Small quality of life improvement for protected guests x86: - Add support for giving the guest full ownership of PMU hardware (contexted switched around the fastpath run loop) and allowing direct access to data MSRs and PMCs (restricted by the vPMU model). KVM still intercepts access to control registers, e.g. to enforce event filtering and to prevent the guest from profiling sensitive host state. This is more accurate, since it has no risk of contention and thus dropped events, and also has significantly less overhead. 2026-01-31mm, swap: cleanup swap entry management workflowKairui Song
The current swap entry allocation/freeing workflow has never had a clear definition. This makes it hard to debug or add new optimizations. This commit introduces a proper definition of how swap entries would be allocated and freed. Now, most operations are folio based, so they will never exceed one swap cluster, and we now have a cleaner border between swap and the rest of mm, making it much easier to follow and debug, especially with new added sanity checks. Also making more optimization possible. Swap entry will be mostly freed and free with a folio bound. The folio lock will be useful for resolving many swap related races. Now swap allocation (except hibernation) always starts with a folio in the swap cache, and gets duped/freed protected by the folio lock: - folio_alloc_swap() - The only allocation entry point now. Context: The folio must be locked. This allocates one or a set of continuous swap slots for a folio and binds them to the folio by adding the folio to the swap cache. The swap slots' swap count start with zero value. - folio_dup_swap() - Increase the swap count of one or more entries. Context: The folio must be locked and in the swap cache. For now, the caller still has to lock the new swap entry owner (e.g., PTL). This increases the ref count of swap entries allocated to a folio. Newly allocated swap slots' count has to be increased by this helper as the folio got unmapped (and swap entries got installed). - folio_put_swap() - Decrease the swap count of one or more entries. Context: The folio must be locked and in the swap cache. For now, the caller still has to lock the new swap entry owner (e.g., PTL). This decreases the ref count of swap entries allocated to a folio. Typically, swapin will decrease the swap count as the folio got installed back and the swap entry got uninstalled This won't remove the folio from the swap cache and free the slot. Lazy freeing of swap cache is helpful for reducing IO. There is already a folio_free_swap() for immediate cache reclaim. This part could be further optimized later. The above locking constraints could be further relaxed when the swap table is fully implemented. Currently dup still needs the caller to lock the swap entry container (e.g. PTL), or a concurrent zap may underflow the swap count. Some swap users need to interact with swap count without involving folio (e.g. forking/zapping the page table or mapping truncate without swapin). In such cases, the caller has to ensure there is no race condition on whatever owns the swap count and use the below helpers: - swap_put_entries_direct() - Decrease the swap count directly. Context: The caller must lock whatever is referencing the slots to avoid a race. Typically the page table zapping or shmem mapping truncate will need to free swap slots directly. If a slot is cached (has a folio bound), this will also try to release the swap cache. - swap_dup_entry_direct() - Increase the swap count directly. Context: The caller must lock whatever is referencing the entries to avoid race, and the entries must already have a swap count > 1. Typically, forking will need to copy the page table and hence needs to increase the swap count of the entries in the table. The page table is locked while referencing the swap entries, so the entries all have a swap count > 1 and can't be freed. Hibernation subsystem is a bit different, so two special wrappers are here: - swap_alloc_hibernation_slot() - Allocate one entry from one device. - swap_free_hibernation_slot() - Free one entry allocated by the above helper. All hibernation entries are exclusive to the hibernation subsystem and should not interact with ordinary swap routines. By separating the workflows, it will be possible to bind folio more tightly with swap cache and get rid of the SWAP_HAS_CACHE as a temporary pin. Every architecture that supports hugetlb_cma command line parameter reserves CMA areas for hugetlb during setup_arch(). This obfuscates the ordering of hugetlb CMA initialization with respect to the rest initialization of the core MM. Introduce arch_hugetlb_cma_order() callback to allow architectures report the desired order-per-bit of CMA areas and provide a week implementation of arch_hugetlb_cma_order() for architectures that don't support hugetlb with CMA. Use this callback in hugetlb_cma_reserve() instead if passing the order as parameter and call hugetlb_cma_reserve() from mm_core_init_early() rather than have it spread over architecture specific code. Every architecture calls sparse_init() during setup_arch() although the data structures created by sparse_init() are not used until the initialization of the core MM. Beside the code duplication, calling sparse_init() from architecture specific code causes ordering differences of vmemmap and HVO initialization on different architectures. Move the call to sparse_init() from architecture specific code to free_area_init() to ensure that vmemmap and HVO initialization order is always the same. 2026-01-26arch, mm: consolidate initialization of nodes, zones and memory mapMike Rapoport (Microsoft)
To initialize node, zone and memory map data structures every architecture calls free_area_init() during setup_arch() and passes it an array of zone limits. Beside code duplication it creates "interesting" ordering cases between allocation and initialization of hugetlb and the memory map. Some architectures allocate hugetlb pages very early in setup_arch() in certain cases, some only create hugetlb CMA areas in setup_arch() and sometimes hugetlb allocations happen mm_core_init(). With arch_zone_limits_init() helper available now on all architectures it is no longer necessary to call free_area_init() from architecture setup code. Rather core MM initialization can call arch_zone_limits_init() in a single place. This allows to unify ordering of hugetlb vs memory map allocation and initialization. Remove the call to free_area_init() from architecture specific code and place it in a new mm_core_init_early() function that is called immediately after setup_arch(). After this refactoring it is possible to consolidate hugetlb allocations and eliminate differences in ordering of hugetlb and memory map initialization among different architectures. As the first step of this consolidation move hugetlb_bootmem_alloc() to mm_core_early_init(). 2025-12-07s390: Unmap early KASAN shadow on memory offliningVasily Gorbik
Teach the memory hotplug path to tear down KASAN shadow that was mapped during early boot when a memory block is offlined. Track for each sclp_mem whether its range was covered by the early KASAN shadow via an early_shadow_mapped flag. When such a block is deconfigured and removed via sclp_config_mem_store(), compute the corresponding shadow range and call vmemmap_free() to unmap the boot mapped shadow, then clear the flag. Using vmemmap_free() for the early shadow is safe despite the use of large mappings in the boot-time KASAN setup. The initial shadow is mapped with 1M and 2G pages, where possible. The minimum hotplug memory block size is 128M and always aligned (the identity mapping is at least 2G aligned), which corresponds to a 16M chunk of at least 1M aligned shadow. PMD-mapped 1M shadow pages therefore never need splitting, and PUD-mapped 2G shadow pages can now be split following the preceding changes. Relax the modify_pagetable() sanity check in vmem so that, with KASAN enabled, it may also operate on the KASAN shadow region in addition to the 1:1 mapping and vmemmap area. This allows the KASAN shadow unmapping to reuse the common vmem helpers. 2025-12-07s390/vmem: Support 2G page splitting for KASAN shadow freeingVasily Gorbik
Export split_pud_page() so it can be used from the vmem code and teach modify_pud_table() to split PUD-sized mappings when only a subrange needs to be removed. If the range to be removed covers a full PUD-sized mapping, keep the existing behavior: clear the PUD entry and free the backing large page (for non-direct mappings). Otherwise, split the PUD-mapped page into PMD mappings and let the walker handle the smaller ranges. This is needed for KASAN early shadow removal support: memory hotplug freeing the KASAN early shadow is the only expected caller that will try to free 2G PUD-mapped regions of non-direct mappings. 2025-11-24KVM: s390: fix missing present bit for gmap pudsClaudio Imbrenda
For hugetlbs, gmap puds have the present bit set. For normal puds (which point to ptes), the bit is not set. This is in contrast to the normal userspace puds, which always have the bit set for present pmds. This causes issues when ___pte_offset_map() is modified to only check for the present bit. The solution to the problem is simply to always set the present bit for present gmap pmds. If it turns out there is still a reason to keep the compat layer this can be reverted at any time in the future. 2025-11-14s390/mm: Fix __ptep_rdp() inline assemblyHeiko Carstens
When a zero ASCE is passed to the __ptep_rdp() inline assembly, the generated instruction should have the R3 field of the instruction set to zero. However the inline assembly is written incorrectly: for such cases a zero is loaded into a register allocated by the compiler and this register is then used by the instruction. This means that selected TLB entries may not be flushed since the specified ASCE does not match the one which was used when the selected TLB entries were created. Fix this by removing the asce and opt parameters of __ptep_rdp(), since all callers always pass zero, and use a hard-coded register zero for the R3 field. The function has a memory leak when kvrealloc() fails. The function directly assigns NULL to the markers pointer, losing the reference to the previously allocated memory. This causes kvfree() in pt_dump_init() to free NULL instead of the leaked memory. Fix by: 1. Using kvrealloc() uniformly for all allocations 2. Using a temporary variable to preserve the original pointer until allocation succeeds 3. With the new interface, s390 will not add all possible hotplug memory in advance, like before, to make it visible in sysfs for online/offline actions. 2025-10-14s390/mm: Support removal of boot-allocated virtual memory mapSumanth Korikkar
On s390, memory blocks are not currently removed via arch_remove_memory(). With upcoming dynamic memory (de)configuration support, runtime removal of memory blocks is possible. This internally involves tearing down identity mapping, virtual memory mappings and freeing the physical memory backing the struct pages metadata. During early boot, physical memory used to back the struct pages metadata in vmemmap is allocated through: setup_arch() -> sparse_init() -> sparse_init_nid() -> __populate_section_memmap() -> vmemmap_alloc_block_buf() -> sparse_buffer_alloc() -> memblock_alloc() Here, sparse_init_nid() sets up virtual-to-physical mapping for struct pages backed by memblock_alloc(). This differs from runtime addition of hotplug memory which uses the buddy allocator later. To correctly free identity mappings, vmemmap mappings during hot-remove, boot-time and runtime allocations must be distinguished using the PageReserved bit: * Boot-time memory, such as identity-mapped page tables allocated via boot_crst_alloc() and reserved via reserve_pgtables() is marked PageReserved in memmap_init_reserved_pages(). * Physical memory backing vmemmap (struct pages from memblock_alloc()) is also marked PageReserved similarly. During teardown, PageReserved bit is checked to distinguish between boot-time allocation or buddy allocation. KVM run fails when guests with 'cmm' cpu feature and host are under memory pressure and use swap heavily. This is because npages becomes ENOMEN (out of memory) in hva_to_pfn_slow() which inturn propagates as EFAULT to qemu. Clearing the page table entry when discarding an address that maps to a swap entry resolves the issue. Remove superfluous newlines from inline assemblies. Compilers use the number of lines of inline assemblies as heuristic for the complexity and inline decisions. Therefore inline assemblies should only contain as many lines as required. A lot of inline assemblies contain a superfluous newline for the last line. Remove such newlines to improve compiler inlining decisions. Similar to common code changes [1] add alloc_hook() wrappers to page table allocation functions to allow for memory allocation profiling. If CONFIG_MEM_ALLOC_PROFILING is enabled call sites of page table allocations are accounted, instead of e.g. only crst_table_alloc() and page_table_alloc(). This allows for slightly better profiling data, and the output of /proc/allocinfo is similar to other architectures.
