2010-11-09Repair memory leakage while ANALYZE-ing complex index expressions.Tom Lane
The general design of memory management in Postgres is that intermediate results computed by an expression are not freed until the end of the tuple cycle. For expression indexes, ANALYZE has to re-evaluate each expression for each of its sample rows, and it wasn't bothering to free intermediate results until the end of processing of that index. This could lead to very substantial leakage if the intermediate results were large, as in a recent example from Jakub Ouhrabka. Fix by doing ResetExprContext for each sample row. This necessitates adding a datumCopy step to ensure that the final expression value isn't recycled too. Some quick testing suggests that this change adds at worst about 10% to the time needed to analyze a table with an expression index; which is annoying, but seems a tolerable price to pay to avoid unexpected out-of-memory problems. Back-patch to all supported branches.
2010-09-23Prevent show_session_authorization from crashing when session_authorizationTom Lane
hasn't been set. The only known case where this can happen is when show_session_authorization is invoked in an autovacuum process, which is possible if an index function calls it, as for example in bug #5669 from Andrew Geery. We could perhaps try to return a sensible value, such as the name of the cluster-owning superuser; but that seems like much more trouble than the case is worth, and in any case it could create new possible failure modes. Simply returning an empty string seems like the most appropriate fix. Back-patch to all supported versions, even those before autovacuum, just in case there's another way to provoke this crash.
2010-08-19Fix possible corruption of AfterTriggerEventLists in subtransaction rollback.Tom Lane
afterTriggerInvokeEvents failed to adjust events->tailfree when truncating the last chunk of an event list. This could result in the data being "de-truncated" by afterTriggerRestoreEventList during a subsequent subtransaction abort. Even that wouldn't kill us, because the re-added data would just be events marked DONE --- unless the data had been partially overwritten by new events. Then we might crash, or in any case misbehave (perhaps fire triggers twice, or fire triggers with the wrong event data). Per bug #5622 from Thue Janus Kristensen. Back-patch to 8.4 where the current trigger list representation was introduced.
2010-08-03Fix inheritance count tracking in ALTER TABLE .. ADD CONSTRAINT.Robert Haas
Without this patch, constraints inherited by children of a parent table which itself has multiple inheritance parents can end up with the wrong coninhcount. After dropping the constraint, the children end up with a leftover copy of the constraint that is not dumped and cannot be dropped. There is a similar problem with ALTER TABLE .. ADD COLUMN, but that looks significantly more difficult to resolve, so I'm committing this fix separately. Back-patch to 8.4, which is the first release that has coninhcount. Report by Hank Enting.

assuming that a local char[] array would be aligned on at least a word boundary. There are architectures on which that is pretty much guaranteed to NOT be the case ... and those arches also don't like non-aligned memory accesses, meaning that log_newpage() would crash if it ever got invoked. Even on Intel-ish machines there's a potential for a large performance penalty from doing I/O to an inadequately aligned buffer. So palloc it instead. Backpatch to 8.0 --- 7.4 doesn't have this code.

2010-05-27Make CREATE INDEX run expression preprocessing on a proposed index expressionTom Lane
before it checks whether the expression is immutable. This covers two cases that were previously handled poorly: 1. SQL function inlining could reduce the apparent volatility of the expression, allowing an expression to be accepted where it previously would not have been. As an example, polymorphic functions must be marked with the worst-case volatility they have for any argument type, but for specific argument types they might not be so volatile, so indexing could be allowed. (Since the planner will refuse to inline functions in cases where the apparent volatility of the expression would increase, this won't break any cases that were accepted before.) 2. A nominally immutable function could have default arguments that are volatile expressions. In such a case insertion of the defaults will increase both the apparent and actual volatility of the expression, so it is *necessary* to check this before allowing the expression to be indexed. Back-patch to 8.4, where default arguments were introduced.

relations (they don't live in pg_toast). This caused an Assert failure in assert-enabled builds. So far as I can see, in a non-assert build it would only have messed up the checks for conflicting names, so a failure would be quite improbable but perhaps not impossible.

It's not clear whether all of these cases could really occur in the field, but at least one of them is easily exposed by simple stress testing, as per my accidental discovery yesterday.

PL/pgSQL function within an exception handler. Make sure we use the right resource owner when we create the tuplestore to hold returned tuples. Simplify tuplestore API so that the caller doesn't need to be in the right memory context when calling tuplestore_put* functions. tuplestore.c automatically switches to the memory context used when the tuplestore was created. Tuplesort was already modified like this earlier. This patch also removes the now useless MemoryContextSwitch calls from callers. Report by Aleksei on pgsql-bugs on Dec 22 2009. Backpatch to 8.1, like the previous patch that broke this.

And there isn't currently any scenario where it's not known, and I can't imagine having one in the future either, so better remove the "or zero" escape hatch and always pass a valid catalog ID. 2009-12-09Prevent indirect security attacks via changing session-local state withinTom Lane
an allegedly immutable index function. It was previously recognized that we had to prevent such a function from executing SET/RESET ROLE/SESSION AUTHORIZATION, or it could trivially obtain the privileges of the session user. However, since there is in general no privilege checking for changes of session-local state, it is also possible for such a function to change settings in a way that might subvert later operations in the same session. Examples include changing search_path to cause an unexpected function to be called, or replacing an existing prepared statement with another one that will execute a function of the attacker's choosing. The present patch secures VACUUM, ANALYZE, and CREATE INDEX/REINDEX against these threats, which are the same places previously deemed to need protection against the SET ROLE issue. GUC changes are still allowed, since there are many useful cases for that, but we prevent security problems by forcing a rollback of any GUC change after completing the operation. Other cases are handled by throwing an error if any change is attempted; these include temp table creation, closing a cursor, and creating or deleting a prepared statement. (In 7.4, the infrastructure to roll back GUC changes doesn't exist, so we settle for rejecting changes of "search_path" in these contexts.) 2009-11-10Fix longstanding problems in VACUUM caused by untimely interruptionsAlvaro Herrera
In VACUUM FULL, an interrupt after the initial transaction has been recorded as committed can cause postmaster to restart with the following error message: PANIC: cannot abort transaction NNNN, it was already committed This problem has been reported many times. In lazy VACUUM, an interrupt after the table has been truncated by lazy_truncate_heap causes other backends' relcache to still point to the removed pages; this can cause future INSERT and UPDATE queries to error out with the following error message: could not read block XX of relation 1663/NNN/MMMM: read only 0 of 8192 bytes The window to this race condition is extremely narrow, but it has been seen in the wild involving a cancelled autovacuum process. The solution for both problems is to inhibit interrupts in both operations until after the respective transactions have been committed. It's not a complete solution, because the transaction could theoretically be aborted by some other error, but at least fixes the most common causes of both problems.
2009-10-27Fix AfterTriggerSaveEvent to use a test and elog, not just Assert, to checkTom Lane
that it's called within an AfterTriggerBeginQuery/AfterTriggerEndQuery pair. The RI cascade triggers suppress that overhead on the assumption that they are always run non-deferred, so it's possible to violate the condition if someone mistakenly changes pg_trigger to mark such a trigger deferred. We don't really care about supporting that, but throwing an error instead of crashing seems desirable. Per report from Marcelo Costa.
2009-10-07Fix snapshot management, take two.Alvaro Herrera
Partially revert the previous patch I installed and replace it with a more general fix: any time a snapshot is pushed as Active, we need to ensure that it will not be modified in the future. This means that if the same snapshot is used as CurrentSnapshot, it needs to be copied separately. This affects serializable transactions only, because CurrentSnapshot has already been copied by RegisterSnapshot and so PushActiveSnapshot does not think it needs another copy. However, CommandCounterIncrement would modify CurrentSnapshot, whereas ActiveSnapshots must not have their command counters incremented. I say "partially" because the regression test I added for the previous bug has been kept. (This restores 8.3 behavior, because before snapmgr.c existed, any snapshot set as Active was copied.) The old implementation was always a tad cheesy, and it finally fails completely as of 8.4, now that the node tree might contain syntax location information. equal() knows it's supposed to ignore those fields, but strcmp() hardly can. Per recent report from Scott Ribe.

The old coding was using a regular snapshot, referenced elsewhere, that was subject to having its command counter updated. Fix by creating a private copy of the snapshot exclusively for the cursor. Backpatch to 8.4, which is when the bug was introduced during the snapshot management rewrite.
2009-09-03Disallow RESET ROLE and RESET SESSION AUTHORIZATION inside security-definerTom Lane
functions. This extends the previous patch that forbade SETting these variables inside security-definer functions. RESET is equally a security hole, since it would allow regaining privileges of the caller; furthermore it can trigger Assert failures and perhaps other internal errors, since the code is not expecting these variables to change in such contexts. The previous patch did not cover this case because assign hooks don't really have enough information, so move the responsibility for preventing this into guc.c. Problem discovered by Heikki Linnakangas. Security: no CVE assigned yet, extends CVE-2007-6600
2009-08-24Fix a violation of WAL coding rules in the recent patch to include anTom Lane
"all tuples visible" flag in heap page headers. The flag update *must* be applied before calling XLogInsert, but heap_update and the tuple moving routines in VACUUM FULL were ignoring this rule. A crash and replay could therefore leave the flag incorrectly set, causing rows to appear visible in seqscans when they should not be. This might explain recent reports of data corruption from Jeff Ross and others. In passing, do a bit of editorialization on comments in visibilitymap.c.
2009-08-12Fix old bug in log_autovacuum_min_duration code: it was relying on being ableTom Lane
to access a Relation entry it had just closed. I happened to be testing with CLOBBER_CACHE_ALWAYS, which made this a guaranteed core dump (at least on machines where sprintf %s isn't forgiving of a NULL pointer). It's probably quite unlikely that it would fail in the field, but a bug is a bug. Fix by moving the relation_close call down past the logging action.

behavior in cases where we don't know the heap tuple count accurately; in particular partial vacuum, but this also makes the API a bit more useful for ANALYZE. This patch adds "estimated_count" flags to both structs so that an approximate count can be flagged as such, and adjusts the logic so that approximate counts are not used for updating pg_class.reltuples. This fixes my previous complaint that VACUUM was putting ridiculous values into pg_class.reltuples for indexes. The actual impact of that bug is limited, because the planner only pays attention to reltuples for an index if the index is partial; which probably explains why beta testers hadn't noticed a degradation in plan quality from it. But it needs to be fixed. The whole thing is a bit messy and should be redesigned in future, because reltuples now has the potential to drift quite far away from reality when a long period elapses with no non-partial vacuums. But this is as good as it's going to get for 8.4.

errors when tables are concurrently dropped. To do this we must take lock on each relation before we check its privileges. The old code was trying to do that the other way around, which is a bit pointless when there are lots of other commands that lock relations before checking privileges. I did keep it checking each relation's privilege before locking the next relation, which is a detail that ALTER TABLE isn't too picky about.

ability to lock relations as they scan pg_inherits, and to ignore any relations that have disappeared by the time we get lock on them. This makes uses of these functions safe against concurrent DROP operations on child tables: we will effectively ignore any just-dropped child, rather than possibly throwing an error as in recent bug report from Thomas Johansson (and similar past complaints). The behavior should not change otherwise, since the code was acquiring those same locks anyway, just a little bit later. An exception is LockTableCommand(), which is still behaving unsafely; but that seems to require some more discussion before we change it.
2009-05-12Do some minor code refactoring in preparation for changing the APIs ofTom Lane
find_inheritance_children() and find_all_inheritors(). I got annoyed that these are buried inside the planner but mostly used elsewhere. So, create a new file catalog/pg_inherits.c and put them there, along with a couple of other functions that search pg_inherits. The code that modifies pg_inherits is (still) in tablecmds.c --- it's kind of entangled with unrelated code that modifies pg_depend and other stuff, so pulling it out seemed like a bigger change than I wanted to make right now. But this file provides a natural home for it if anyone ever gets around to that. This commit just moves code around; it doesn't change anything, except I succumbed to the temptation to make a couple of trivial optimizations in typeInheritsFrom().
2009-05-07Add an option to AlterTableCreateToastTable() to allow its caller to forceTom Lane
a toast table to be built, even if the sum-of-column-widths calculation indicates one isn't needed. This is needed by pg_migrator because if the old table has a toast table, we have to migrate over the toast table since it might contain some live data, even though subsequent column drops could mean that no recently-added rows could require toasting.

Per a gripe from Robert Haas about EXPLAIN output of a WITH query being inadequate, plus some longstanding pet peeves of my own.

temp relations; this is no more expensive than before, now that we have pg_class.relistemp. Insert tests into bufmgr.c to prevent attempting to fetch pages from nonlocal temp relations. This provides a low-level defense against bugs-of-omission allowing temp pages to be loaded into shared buffers, as in the contrib/pgstattuple problem reported by Stuart Bishop. While at it, tweak a bunch of places to use new relcache tests (instead of expensive probes into pg_namespace) to detect local or nonlocal temp tables.

2009-03-24Implement "fastupdate" support for GIN indexes, in which we try to accumulateTom Lane
multiple index entries in a holding area before adding them to the main index structure. This helps because bulk insert is (usually) significantly faster than retail insert for GIN. This patch also removes GIN support for amgettuple-style index scans. The API defined for amgettuple is difficult to support with fastupdate, and the previously committed partial-match feature didn't really work with it either. We might eventually figure a way to put back amgettuple support, but it won't happen for 8.4. catversion bumped because of change in GIN's pg_am entry, and because the format of GIN indexes changed on-disk (there's a metapage now, and possibly a pending list).
