2025-12-09Use palloc_object() and palloc_array() in more areas of the treeMichael Paquier
The idea is to encourage more the use of these new routines across the tree, as these offer stronger type safety guarantees than palloc(). The following paths are included in this batch, treating all the areas proposed by the author for the most trivial changes, except src/backend (by far the largest batch): src/bin/ src/common/ src/fe_utils/ src/include/ src/pl/ src/test/ src/tutorial/ Similar work has been done in 31d3847a37be. The code compiles the same before and after this commit, with the following exceptions due to changes in line numbers because some of the new allocation formulas are shorter: blkreftable.c pgfnames.c pl_exec.c Author: David Geier <geidav.pg@gmail.com> Discussion: https://postgr.es/m/ad0748d4-3080-436e-b0bc-ac8f86a3466a@gmail.com
2025-10-01test_json_parser: Speed up 002_inline.plJacob Champion
Some macOS machines are having trouble with 002_inline, which executes the JSON parser test executables hundreds of times in a nested loop. Both developer machines and buildfarm critters have shown excessive test durations, upwards of 20 seconds. Push the innermost loop of 002_inline, which iterates through differing chunk sizes, down into the test executable. (I'd eventually like to push all of the JSON unit tests down into C, but this is an easy win in the short term.) Testers have reported a speedup between 4-9x. 2025-04-23Allocate JsonLexContexts on the heap to avoid warningsDaniel Gustafsson
The stack allocated JsonLexContexts, in combination with codepaths using goto, were causing warnings when compiling with LTO enabled as the optimizer is unable to figure out that is safe. Rather than contort the code with workarounds for this simply heap allocate the structs instead as these are not in any performance critical paths. 2025-02-04meson: Add test dependencies for test_json_parserAndres Freund
This is required to ensure correct test dependencies, previously the test binaries would not necessarily be built. The missing dependency was, e.g., visible when doing ninja clean && ninja meson-test-prereq && m test --no-rebuild --suite setup --suite test_json_parser Apply this to all branches with meson support, as part of an effort to fix incorrect test dependencies that can lead to test failures. 2024-11-27jsonapi: add lexer option to keep token ownershipAndrew Dunstan
Commit 0785d1b8b adds support for libpq as a JSON client, but allocations for string tokens can still be leaked during parsing failures. This is tricky to fix for the object_field semantic callbacks: the field name must remain valid until the end of the object, but if a parsing error is encountered partway through, object_field_end() won't be invoked and the client won't get a chance to free the field name. This patch adds a flag to switch the ownership of parsed tokens to the lexer. When this is enabled, the client must make a copy of any tokens it wants to persist past the callback lifetime, but the lexer will handle necessary cleanup on failure. Backend uses of the JSON parser don't need to use this flag, since the parser's allocations will occur in a short lived memory context. A -o option has been added to test_json_parser_incremental to exercise the new setJsonLexContextOwnsTokens() API, and the test_json_parser TAP tests make use of it. (The test program now cleans up allocated memory, so that tests can be usefully run under leak sanitizers.) 2024-09-11common/jsonapi: support libpq as a clientPeter Eisentraut
Based on a patch by Michael Paquier. For libpq, use PQExpBuffer instead of StringInfo. This requires us to track allocation failures so that we can return JSON_OUT_OF_MEMORY as needed rather than exit()ing. 2024-07-10Use diff's --strip-trailing-cr flag where appropriate on WindowsAndrew Dunstan
Test result files might be checked out using Unix or Windows style line endings, depening on git flags, so on Windows we use the --strip-trailing-cr flag to tell diff to ignore line endings differences. The flag is added to the diff invocation for the test_json_parser module tests and the pg_bsd_indent tests. in pg_regress.c we replace the current use of the "-w" flag, which ignore all white space differences, with this one which only ignores line end differences. 2024-05-09Fix overread in JSON parsing errors for incomplete byte sequencesMichael Paquier
json_lex_string() relies on pg_encoding_mblen_bounded() to point to the end of a JSON string when generating an error message, and the input it uses is not guaranteed to be null-terminated. It was possible to walk off the end of the input buffer by a few bytes when the last bytes consist of an incomplete multi-byte sequence, as token_terminator would point to a location defined by pg_encoding_mblen_bounded() rather than the end of the input. This commit switches token_terminator so as the error uses data up to the end of the JSON input. More work should be done so as this code could rely on an equivalent of report_invalid_encoding() so as incorrect byte sequences can show in error messages in a readable form. This requires work for at least two cases in the JSON parsing API: an incomplete token and an invalid escape sequence. A more complete solution may be too invasive for a backpatch, so this is left as a future improvement, taking care of the overread first. A test is added on HEAD as test_json_parser makes this issue straight-forward to check. Note that pg_encoding_mblen_bounded() no longer has any callers. This will be removed on HEAD with a separate commit, as this is proving to encourage unsafe coding. 2024-04-04Further cleanup for recent JSON-related commits.Tom Lane
The link commands in test_json_parser/Makefile were a long way shy of a load, as evidenced by buildfarm failures. Model them on pgxs.mk's PROGRAM rule. (Probably we should have put these two test programs in different subdirectories so we could actually use the PROGRAM rule. But I won't question that decision today.)

2024-04-04Introduce a non-recursive JSON parserAndrew Dunstan
This parser uses an explicit prediction stack, unlike the present recursive descent parser where the parser state is represented on the call stack. This difference makes the new parser suitable for use in incremental parsing of huge JSON documents that cannot be conveniently handled piece-wise by the recursive descent parser. One potential use for this will be in parsing large backup manifests associated with incremental backups. Because this parser is somewhat slower than the recursive descent parser, it is not replacing that parser, but is an additional parser available to callers. For testing purposes, if the build is done with -DFORCE_JSON_PSTACK, all JSON parsing is done with the non-recursive parser, in which case only trivial regression differences in error messages should be observed.
