debugger
- "Enable hung_task and lockup cases to dump system info on demand" (Feng Tang)
adds a sysctl which can be used to cause additional info dumping when
the hung-task and lockup detectors fire
- "lib/base64: add generic encoder/decoder, migrate users" (Kuan-Wei Chiu)
adds a general base64 encoder/decoder to lib/ and migrates several
users away from their private implementations
- "rbree: inline rb_first() and rb_last()" (Eric Dumazet)
makes TCP a little faster
- "liveupdate: Rework KHO for in-kernel users" (Pasha Tatashin)
reworks the KEXEC Handover interfaces in preparation for Live Update
Orchestrator (LUO), and possibly for other future clients
- "kho: simplify state machine and enable dynamic updates" (Pasha Tatashin)
increases the flexibility of KEXEC Handover. Also preparation for LUO
- "Live Update Orchestrator" (Pasha Tatashin)
is a major new feature targeted at cloud environments. Quoting the
cover letter:
This series introduces the Live Update Orchestrator, a kernel
subsystem designed to facilitate live kernel updates using a
kexec-based reboot. This capability is critical for cloud
environments, allowing hypervisors to be updated with minimal
downtime for running virtual machines. LUO achieves this by
preserving the state of selected resources, such as memory,
devices and their dependencies, across the kernel transition.
As a key feature, this series includes support for preserving
memfd file descriptors, which allows critical in-memory data, such
as guest RAM or any other large memory region, to be maintained in
RAM across the kexec reboot.
Mike Rappaport merits a mention here, for his extensive review and
testing work.
- "kexec: reorganize kexec and kdump sysfs" (Sourabh Jain)
moves the kexec and kdump sysfs entries from /sys/kernel/ to
/sys/kernel/kexec/ and adds back-compatibility symlinks which can
hopefully be removed one day
- "kho: fixes for vmalloc restoration" (Mike Rapoport)
fixes a BUG which was being hit during KHO restoration of vmalloc()
regions

This follow-up patch completes centralization of kselftest.h and
ksefltest_harness.h includes in remaining seltests files, replacing all
relative paths with a non-relative paths using shared -I include path in
lib.mk
Tested with gcc-13.3 and clang-18.1, and cross-compiled successfully on
riscv, arm64, x86_64 and powerpc arch.

If interrupted by a signal clock_nanosleep() returns the remaining time
into the structure pointed to by the rmtp parameter. So far this
functionality was not tested by the timer selftests.
Extend the nanosleep selftest to cover this feature.

Several tests in the posix_timers selftest which test timer behavior
related to SIG_IGN fail on kernels older than 6.13. This is due to
a refactoring of signal handling in commit caf77435dd8a ("signal:
Handle ignored signals in do_sigaction(action != SIG_IGN)").
A previous attempt to fix this by adding a kernel version check to each
of the nine affected tests was suboptimal, as it resulted in emitting
the same skip message nine times.
Following the suggestion from Thomas Gleixner, this is refactored to
perform a single version check in main(). To satisfy the kselftest
framework's requirement for the test count to match the declared plan,
the plan is now conditionally set to 10 (for older kernels) or 19.
While setting the plan conditionally may seem complex, it is the
better approach to avoid the alternatives: either running tests on
unsupported kernels that are known to fail, or emitting a noisy series
of nine identical skip messages. A single informational message is now
printed instead when the tests are skipped.

Lei Chen reported a bug with CLOCK_MONOTONIC_COARSE having inconsistencies
when NTP is adjusting the clock frequency.
This has gone seemingly undetected for ~15 years, illustrating a clear gap
in our testing.
The skew_consistency test is intended to catch this sort of problem, but
was focused on only evaluating CLOCK_MONOTONIC, and thus missed the problem
on CLOCK_MONOTONIC_COARSE.
So adjust the test to run with all clockids for 60 seconds each instead of
10 minutes with just CLOCK_MONOTONIC.

The exact timer ID allocation mode is used by CRIU to restore timers with a
given ID. Add a test case for it.
It's skipped on older kernels when the prctl() fails.

When adapting the test to the kselftest framework, a few printf() calls
indicating test progress were not updated.

timers tests defines CLOCKIDs locally. Remove all local CLOCKIDs except
CLOCK_HWSPECIFIC and use defines from time.h header file.
CLOCK_HWSPECIFIC and CLOCK_SGI_CYCLE are the same and CLOCK_SGI_CYCLE
is deprecated,

Remove local NSEC_PER_SEC and USEC_PER_SEC defines. Pick them up from
include/vdso/time64.h. This requires -I $(top_srcdir) to the timers
Makefile to include the include/vdso/time64.h.
posix_timers test names the defines NSECS_PER_SEC and USECS_PER_SEC.
Change posix_timers test references to the defines to match the
defines in the header file.

__fatal_error routine doesn't check strerror_r() return value,
which results in the following compile time warning:
posix_timers.c: In function ‘__fatal_error’:

Fix this by adding a check for return value and error handling appropriate
for the GNU-specific strerror_r() in use in __fatal_error(). Check if
return string is null and handle accordingly.
From Linux strerror_r() manual page:
"The GNU-specific strerror_r() returns a pointer to a string containing
the error message. This may be either a pointer to a string that the
function stores in buf, or a pointer to some (immutable) static string
(in which case buf is unused). If the function stores a string in buf,
then at most buflen bytes are stored (the string may be truncated if
buflen is too small and errnum is unknown). The string always includes
a terminating null byte."

Make timespec pointers, pointers to const in checklist function. As a
consequence, make list parameter in checklist function pointer to const
as well. Const-correctness increases readability.
Improvement was found by running cppcheck tool on the patched file as

When a timer signal is blocked and later unblocked then one signal should
be delivered with the correct number of overruns since the timer was queued.

timer_gettime() must return the correct expiry time for interval timers
even when the timer is not armed, which is the case when a signal is
pending but blocked.
Works correctly for regular posix timers, but not for posix CPU timers.
Add a selftest to validate the fixes.

Posix timers with a delivery mode of SIGEV_NONE deliver no signals but the
remaining expiry time must be readable via timer_gettime() for both one
shot and interval timers.
That's implemented correctly for regular posix timers but broken for posix
CPU timers.
Add a self test so the fixes can be verified.

Add a test case to validate correct behaviour vs. timer reprogramming and
deletion.
The handling of queued signals in case of timer reprogramming or deletion
is inconsistent at best.
POSIX does not really specify the behaviour for that:
- "The effect of disarming or resetting a timer with pending expiration
notifications is unspecified."
- "The disposition of pending signals for the deleted timer is
unspecified."
In both cases it is reasonable to expect that pending signals are
discarded. Especially in the reprogramming case it does not make sense to
account for previous overruns or to deliver a signal for a timer which
has been disarmed.
Add tests to validate that no unexpected signals are delivered. They fail
for now until the signal and posix timer code is updated.

Add a test case to validate correct behaviour vs. SIG_IGN.
The posix specification states:
"Setting a signal action to SIG_IGN for a signal that is pending shall
cause the pending signal to be discarded, whether or not it is blocked."
The kernel implements this in the signal handling code, but due to the way
how posix timers are handling SIG_IGN for periodic timers, the behaviour
after installing a real handler again is inconsistent and suprising.
The following sequence is expected to deliver a signal:
install_handler(SIG);
block_signal(SIG);
timer_create(...); <- Should send SIG
timer_settime(value=100ms, interval=100ms);
sleep(1); <- Timer expires and queues signal, timer is not rearmed
as that should happen in the signal delivery path
ignore_signal(SIG); <- Discards queued signal
install_handler(SIG); <- Restore handler, should rearm but does not
sleep(1);
unblock_signal(SIG); <- Should deliver one signal with overrun count
set in siginfo
This fails because nothing rearms the timer when the signal handler is
restored. Add a test for this case which fails until the signal and posix
timer code is fixed.

When building with clang, via:
make LLVM=1 -C tools/testing/selftest
...clang warns about an unused irqcount variable. clang is correct: the
variable is incremented and then ignored.
Fix this by deleting the irqcount variable.

After commit f7d5bcd35d42 ("selftests: kselftest: Mark functions that
unconditionally call exit() as __noreturn"), ksft_exit_...() functions
are marked as __noreturn, which means the return type should not be
'int' but 'void' because they are not returning anything (and never were
since exit() has always been called).
To facilitate updating the return type of these functions, remove
'return' before the calls to ksft_exit_...(), as __noreturn prevents the
compiler from warning that a caller of the ksft_exit functions does not
return a value because the program will terminate upon calling these
functions.

The struct adjtimex freq field takes a signed value who's units are in
shifted (<<16) parts-per-million.
Unfortunately for negative adjustments, the straightforward use of:
freq = ppm << 16 trips undefined behavior warnings with clang:

check_timer_distribution() runs ten threads in a busy loop and tries to
test that the kernel distributes a process posix CPU timer signal to every
thread over time.
There is not guarantee that this is true even after commit bcb7ee79029d
("posix-timers: Prefer delivery of signals to the current thread") because
that commit only avoids waking up the sleeping process leader thread, but
that has nothing to do with the actual signal delivery.
As the signal is process wide the first thread which observes sigpending
and wins the race to lock sighand will deliver the signal. Testing shows
that this hangs on a regular base because some threads never win the race.
The comment "This primarily tests that the kernel does not favour any one."
is wrong. The kernel does favour a thread which hits the timer interrupt
when CLOCK_PROCESS_CPUTIME_ID expires.
Rewrite the test so it only checks that the group leader sleeping in join()
never receives SIGALRM and the thread which burns CPU cycles receives all
signals.
In older kernels which do not have commit bcb7ee79029d ("posix-timers:
Prefer delivery of signals to the current thread") the test-case fails
immediately, the very 1st tick wakes the leader up. Otherwise it quickly
succeeds after 100 ticks.
CI testing wants to use newer selftest versions on stable kernels. In this
case the test is guaranteed to fail.
So check in the failure case whether the kernel version is less than v6.3
and skip the test result in that case.

Currently the nsleep-lat test does not produce KTAP output but rather a
custom format. This means that we only get a pass/fail for the suite, not
for each individual test that the suite does. Convert to using the standard
kselftest output functions which result in KTAP output being generated.

for each individual test that the suite does. Convert to using the standard
kselftest output functions which result in KTAP output being generated.
As part of this fix the printing of diagnostics in the unlikely event that
the pthread APIs fail, these were using perror() but the API functions
directly return an error code instead of setting errno.

Test that POSIX timers using CLOCK_PROCESS_CPUTIME_ID eventually deliver
a signal to all running threads. This effectively tests that the kernel
doesn't prefer any one thread (or subset of threads) for signal delivery.

So we have proper counters at the end of a test. We also print the
kselftest header at the end of the test, so we don't mix with the output
of the child process. There is only this one test anyhow.

debugging, this is time consuming. Add a parameter to skip it.

The return value from system() is a waitpid-style integer. Do not return
it directly because with the implicit masking in exit() it will always
return 0. Access it with appropriate macros to really pass on errors.

This test will require /dev/rtc0, the default RTC device, or one
specified by user to run. Since this default RTC is not guaranteed to
exist on all of the devices, so check its existence first, otherwise
skip this test with the kselftest skip code 4.
Without this patch this test will fail like this on a s390x zVM:
$ selftests: timers: rtcpie
$ /dev/rtc0: No such file or directory
not ok 1 selftests: timers: rtcpie # exit=22
With this patch:
$ selftests: timers: rtcpie
$ Default RTC /dev/rtc0 does not exist. Test Skipped!
not ok 9 selftests: timers: rtcpie # SKIP
Fixed up change log so "With this patch" text doesn't get dropped.

The following 4 tests in timers can take longer than the default 45
seconds that added in commit 852c8cbf34d3 ("selftests/kselftest/runner.sh:
Add 45 second timeout per test") to run:
* nsleep-lat - 2m7.350s
* set-timer-lat - 2m0.66s
* inconsistency-check - 1m45.074s
* raw_skew - 2m0.013s
Thus they will be marked as failed with the current 45s setting:
not ok 3 selftests: timers: nsleep-lat # TIMEOUT
not ok 4 selftests: timers: set-timer-lat # TIMEOUT
not ok 6 selftests: timers: inconsistency-check # TIMEOUT
not ok 7 selftests: timers: raw_skew # TIMEOUT
Disable the timeout setting for timers can make these tests finish
properly:

PTI has a significant impact on precision of the MONOTONIC_RAW clock,
which prevents a lot of computers from running the freq-step test.
Increase the maximum acceptable precision for the test to not be skipped
to 500 nanoseconds.
After commit 78b98e3c5a66 ("timekeeping/ntp: Determine the multiplier
directly from NTP tick length") the frequency and time errors should be
much smaller. Reduce the maximum acceptable values for the test to pass
to 0.02 ppm and 50 nanoseconds respectively.
