2025-09-19Add optional pid parameter to pg_replication_origin_session_setup().Amit Kapila
Commit 216a784829c introduced parallel apply workers, allowing multiple processes to share a replication origin. To support this, replorigin_session_setup() was extended to accept a pid argument identifying the process using the origin. This commit exposes that capability through the SQL interface function pg_replication_origin_session_setup() by adding an optional pid parameter. This enables multiple processes to coordinate replication using the same origin when using SQL-level replication functions. This change allows the non-builtin logical replication solutions to implement parallel apply for large transactions. Additionally, an existing internal error was made user-facing, as it can now be triggered via the exposed SQL API. 2025-04-10Fix data loss in logical replication.Amit Kapila
Data loss can happen when the DDLs like ALTER PUBLICATION ... ADD TABLE ... or ALTER TYPE ... that don't take a strong lock on table happens concurrently to DMLs on the tables involved in the DDL. This happens because logical decoding doesn't distribute invalidations to concurrent transactions and those transactions use stale cache data to decode the changes. The problem becomes bigger because we keep using the stale cache even after those in-progress transactions are finished and skip the changes required to be sent to the client. This commit fixes the issue by distributing invalidation messages from catalog-modifying transactions to all concurrent in-progress transactions. This allows the necessary rebuild of the catalog cache when decoding new changes after concurrent DDL. We observed performance regression primarily during frequent execution of *publication DDL* statements that modify the published tables. The regression is minor or nearly nonexistent for DDLs that do not affect the published tables or occur infrequently, making this a worthwhile cost to resolve a longstanding data loss issue. An alternative approach considered was to take a strong lock on each affected table during publication modification. However, this would only address issues related to publication DDLs (but not the ALTER TYPE ...) and require locking every relation in the database for publications created as FOR ALL TABLES, which is impractical. The bug exists in all supported branches, but we are backpatching till 14. The fix for 13 requires somewhat bigger changes than this fix, so the fix for that branch is still under discussion. 2024-07-11Fix possibility of logical decoding partial transaction changes.Masahiko Sawada
When creating and initializing a logical slot, the restart_lsn is set to the latest WAL insertion point (or the latest replay point on standbys). Subsequently, WAL records are decoded from that point to find the start point for extracting changes in the DecodingContextFindStartpoint() function. Since the initial restart_lsn could be in the middle of a transaction, the start point must be a consistent point where we won't see the data for partial transactions. Previously, when not building a full snapshot, serialized snapshots were restored, and the SnapBuild jumps to the consistent state even while finding the start point. Consequently, the slot's restart_lsn and confirmed_flush could be set to the middle of a transaction. This could lead to various unexpected consequences. Specifically, there were reports of logical decoding decoding partial transactions, and assertion failures occurred because only subtransactions were decoded without decoding their top-level transaction until decoding the commit record. To resolve this issue, the changes prevent restoring the serialized snapshot and jumping to the consistent state while finding the start point. On v17 and HEAD, a flag indicating whether snapshot restores should be skipped has been added to the SnapBuild struct, and SNAPBUILD_VERSION has been bumpded. On backbranches, the flag is stored in the LogicalDecodingContext instead, preserving on-disk compatibility. Backpatch to all supported versions. 2022-08-11Fix catalog lookup with the wrong snapshot during logical decoding.Amit Kapila
Previously, we relied on HEAP2_NEW_CID records and XACT_INVALIDATION records to know if the transaction has modified the catalog, and that information is not serialized to snapshot. Therefore, after the restart, if the logical decoding decodes only the commit record of the transaction that has actually modified a catalog, we will miss adding its XID to the snapshot. Thus, we will end up looking at catalogs with the wrong snapshot. To fix this problem, this change adds the list of transaction IDs and sub-transaction IDs, that have modified catalogs and are running during snapshot serialization, to the serialized snapshot. After restart or otherwise, when we restore from such a serialized snapshot, the corresponding list is restored in memory. Now, when decoding a COMMIT record, we check both the list and the ReorderBuffer to see if the transaction has modified catalogs. Since this adds additional information to the serialized snapshot, we cannot backpatch it. For back branches, we took another approach. We remember the last-running-xacts list of the decoded RUNNING_XACTS record after restoring the previously serialized snapshot. Then, we mark the transaction as containing catalog changes if it's in the list of initial running transactions and its commit record has XACT_XINFO_HAS_INVALS. This doesn't require any file format changes but the transaction will end up being added to the snapshot even if it has only relcache invalidations. But that won't be a problem since we use snapshot built during decoding only to read system catalogs. This commit bumps SNAPBUILD_VERSION because of a change in SnapBuild. Commit 0da92dc530 improved the logical decoding infrastructure to handle sequences, and did various changes to related parts (WAL logging etc.). But it did not include any implementation of the new callbacks added to OutputPluginCallbacks. This extends test_decoding with two callbacks to decode sequences. The decoding of sequences may be disabled using 'include-sequences', a new option of the output plugin. 2021-01-04Allow decoding at prepare time in ReorderBuffer.Amit Kapila
This patch allows PREPARE-time decoding of two-phase transactions (if the output plugin supports this capability), in which case the transactions are replayed at PREPARE and then committed later when COMMIT PREPARED arrives. Now that we decode the changes before the commit, the concurrent aborts may cause failures when the output plugin consults catalogs (both system and user-defined). We detect such failures with a special sqlerrcode ERRCODE_TRANSACTION_ROLLBACK introduced by commit 7259736a6e and stop decoding the remaining changes. Then we rollback the changes when rollback prepared is encountered. We were decoding empty transactions via streaming APIs added in commit 45fdc9738b even when the user used the option 'skip-empty-xacts'. The APIs makes no effort to skip empty xacts under the assumption that we will never try to stream such transactions. However, that is not true because we can pick to stream a transaction that has change messages for REORDER_BUFFER_CHANGE_INTERNAL_SNAPSHOT and we don't send such messages to downstream rather they are just to update the internal state. So, we need to skip such xacts when plugin uses the option 'skip-empty-xacts'. 2020-08-08Implement streaming mode in ReorderBuffer.Amit Kapila
Instead of serializing the transaction to disk after reaching the logical_decoding_work_mem limit in memory, we consume the changes we have in memory and invoke stream API methods added by commit 45fdc9738b. However, sometimes if we have incomplete toast or speculative insert we spill to the disk because we can't generate the complete tuple and stream. And, as soon as we get the complete tuple we stream the transaction including the serialized changes. We can do this incremental processing thanks to having assignments (associating subxact with toplevel xacts) in WAL right away, and thanks to logging the invalidation messages at each command end. These features are added by commits 0bead9af48 and c55040ccd0 respectively. Now that we can stream in-progress transactions, the concurrent aborts may cause failures when the output plugin consults catalogs (both system and user-defined). We handle such failures by returning ERRCODE_TRANSACTION_ROLLBACK sqlerrcode from system table scan APIs to the backend or WALSender decoding a specific uncommitted transaction. The decoding logic on the receipt of such a sqlerrcode aborts the decoding of the current transaction and continue with the decoding of other transactions. We have ReorderBufferTXN pointer in each ReorderBufferChange by which we know which xact it belongs to. The output plugin can use this to decide which changes to discard in case of stream_abort_cb (e.g. when a subxact gets discarded). We also provide a new option via SQL APIs to fetch the changes being streamed. Manifested as ERROR: subtransaction logged without previous top-level txn record this check forbids legit behaviours like - First xl_xact_assignment record is beyond reading, i.e. earlier restart_lsn. - After restart_lsn there is some change of a subxact. - After that, there is second xl_xact_assignment (for another subxact) revealing the relationship between top and first subxact. Such a transaction won't be streamed anyway because we hadn't seen it in full. Saying for sure whether xact of some record encountered after the snapshot was deserialized can be streamed or not requires to know whether it wrote something before deserialization point --if yes, it hasn't been seen in full and can't be decoded. Snapshot doesn't have such info, so there is no easy way to relax the check. A couple of custom Makefile rules have been accumulated across the tree to cover the lack of facility in PGXS for a couple of releases when using those test suites, which are all now replaced with the new flags, without reducing the test coverage. Note that tests of contrib/bloom/ are not enabled yet, as those are proving unstable in the buildfarm. A set of failures in buildfarm machines are proving that this is not quite ready yet because of another set of issues: - MSVC scripts assume that REGRESS_OPTS can only use top_builddir. Some test suites actually finish by using top_srcdir, like pg_stat_statements which cause the regression tests to never run. - Trying to enforce top_builddir does not work either when using VPATH as this is not recognized properly. - TAP tests of bloom are unstable on various platforms, causing various failures.

The set of scripts in charge of running the regression tests for MSVC run currently under the assumption that only $(top_builddir) can used in option values defined in REGRESS_OPTS, and those options need to have a specific format as well to be correctly parsed, so fix the Makefile values so as those are correctly set. Per complains from buildfarm member dory and whelk, with some extra testing done on my side with MSVC to check this patch.

2018-06-26Fix "base" snapshot handling in logical decodingAlvaro Herrera
Two closely related bugs are fixed. First, xmin of logical slots was advanced too early. During xl_running_xacts processing, xmin of the slot was set to the oldest running xid in the record, but that's wrong: actually, snapshots which will be used for not-yet-replayed transactions might consider older txns as running too, so we need to keep xmin back for them. The problem wasn't noticed earlier because DDL which allows to delete tuple (set xmax) while some another not-yet-committed transaction looks at it is pretty rare, if not unique: e.g. all forms of ALTER TABLE which change schema acquire ACCESS EXCLUSIVE lock conflicting with any inserts. The included test case (test_decoding's oldest_xmin) uses ALTER of a composite type, which doesn't have such interlocking. To deal with this, we must be able to quickly retrieve oldest xmin (oldest running xid among all assigned snapshots) from ReorderBuffer. To fix, add another list of ReorderBufferTXNs to the reorderbuffer, where transactions are sorted by base-snapshot-LSN. This is slightly different from the existing (sorted by first-LSN) list, because a transaction can have an earlier LSN but a later Xmin, if its first record does not obtain an xmin (eg. xl_xact_assignment). Note this new list doesn't fully replace the existing txn list: we still need that one to prevent WAL recycling. The second issue concerns SnapBuilder snapshots and subtransactions. SnapBuildDistributeNewCatalogSnapshot never assigned a snapshot to a transaction that is known to be a subtxn, which is good in the common case that the top-level transaction already has one (no point in doing so), but a bug otherwise. To fix, arrange to transfer the snapshot from the subtxn to its top-level txn as soon as the kinship gets known. test_decoding's snapshot_transfer verifies this. Also, fix a minor memory leak: refcount of toplevel's old base snapshot was not decremented when the snapshot is transferred from child. Liberally sprinkle code comments, and rewrite a few existing ones. This part is my (Álvaro's) contribution to this commit, as I had to write all those comments in order to understand the existing code and Arseny's patch. Previously if a directory had both isolationtester and plain regression tests, they couldn't be run in parallel, because they'd access the same files/directories. That, so far, only affected contrib/test_decoding. Rather than fix that locally in contrib/test_decoding, improve pg_regress_isolation_[install]check to use separate resources from plain regression tests. That requires a minor change in pg_regress, namely that the --outputdir is created if not already existing, that seems like good idea anyway. Use the improved helpers even where previously not used. Before initializing iteration over a subtransaction's changes, the last few changes were not spilled to disk. That's correct if the transaction didn't spill to disk, but otherwise... This bug can lead to missed or misorderd subtransaction contents when they were spilled to disk. Move spilling of the remaining in-memory changes to ReorderBufferIterTXNInit(), where it can easily be applied to the top transaction and, if present, subtransactions. Since this code had too many bugs already, noticeably increase test coverage. Logical decoding's reorderbuffer keeps transactions in an LSN ordered list for efficiency. To make that's efficiently possible upper-level xids are forced to be logged before nested subtransaction xids. That only works though if these records are all looked at: Unfortunately we didn't do so for e.g. row level locks, which are otherwise uninteresting for logical decoding. This could lead to errors like: "ERROR: subxact logged without previous toplevel record". It's not sufficient to just look at row locking records, the xid could appear first due to a lot of other types of records (which will trigger the transaction to be marked logged with MarkCurrentTransactionIdLoggedIfAny). So invent infrastructure to tell reorderbuffer about xids seen, when they'd otherwise not pass through reorderbuffer.c. This didn't trigger a regression test failure because we explicitly don't show commit timestamps in the regression tests, as they obviously are variable. Add a test that checks that a decoded commit's timestamp is within minutes of NOW() from before the commit. The "check" target no longer needs to depend on "all", because it now runs "install" directly, which in turn depends on "all". Doing both will cause problems with parallel make, because two builds will run next to each other. Also remove the redirection of the temp-install output into a log file. 2015-04-29Introduce replication progress tracking infrastructure.Andres Freund
When implementing a replication solution ontop of logical decoding, two related problems exist: * How to safely keep track of replication progress * How to change replication behavior, based on the origin of a row; e.g. to avoid loops in bi-directional replication setups The solution to these problems, as implemented here, consist out of three parts: 1) 'replication origins', which identify nodes in a replication setup. 2) 'replication progress tracking', which remembers, for each replication origin, how far replay has progressed in a efficient and crash safe manner. 3) The ability to filter out changes performed on the behest of a replication origin during logical decoding; this allows complex replication topologies. E.g. by filtering all replayed changes out. Most of this could also be implemented in "userspace", e.g. by inserting additional rows contain origin information, but that ends up being much less efficient and more complicated. We don't want to require various replication solutions to reimplement logic for this independently. The infrastructure is intended to be generic enough to be reusable. This infrastructure also replaces the 'nodeid' infrastructure of commit timestamps. It is intended to provide all the former capabilities, except that there's only 2^16 different origins; but now they integrate with logical decoding. Additionally more functionality is accessible via SQL. Since the commit timestamp infrastructure has also been introduced in 9.5 (commit 73c986add) changing the API is not a problem. For now the number of origins for which the replication progress can be tracked simultaneously is determined by the max_replication_slots GUC. That GUC is not a perfect match to configure this, but there doesn't seem to be sufficient reason to introduce a separate new one. Bumps both catversion and wal page magic. Before, make check-world would create a new temporary installation for each test suite, which is slow and wasteful. Instead, we now create one test installation that is used by all test suites that are part of a make run. The management of the temporary installation is removed from pg_regress and handled in the makefiles. 2014-11-13Fix and improve cache invalidation logic for logical decoding.Andres Freund
There are basically three situations in which logical decoding needs to perform cache invalidation. During/After replaying a transaction with catalog changes, when skipping a uninteresting transaction that performed catalog changes and when erroring out while replaying a transaction. Unfortunately these three cases were all done slightly differently - partially because 8de3e410fa, which greatly simplifies matters, got committed in the midst of the development of logical decoding. The actually problematic case was when logical decoding skipped transaction commits (and thus processed invalidations). When used via the SQL interface cache invalidation could access the catalog - bad, because we didn't set up enough state to allow that correctly. It'd not be hard to setup sufficient state, but the simpler solution is to always perform cache invalidation outside a valid transaction. Also make the different cache invalidation cases look as similar as possible, to ease code review. This fixes the assertion failure reported by Antonin Houska in 53EE02D9.7040702@gmail.com. The presented testcase has been expanded into a regression test. Backpatch to 9.4, where logical decoding was introduced.
2014-11-12Fix several weaknesses in slot and logical replication on-disk serialization.Andres Freund
Heikki noticed in 544E23C0.8090605@vmware.com that slot.c and snapbuild.c were missing the FIN_CRC32 call when computing/checking checksums of on disk files. That doesn't lower the the error detection capabilities of the checksum, but is inconsistent with other usages. In a followup mail Heikki also noticed that, contrary to a comment, the 'version' and 'length' struct fields of replication slot's on disk data where not covered by the checksum. That's not likely to lead to actually missed corruption as those fields are cross checked with the expected version and the actual file length. But it's wrong nonetheless. As fixing these issues makes existing on disk files unreadable, bump the expected versions of on disk files for both slots and logical decoding historic catalog snapshots. This means that loading old files will fail with ERROR: "replication slot file ... has unsupported version 1" and ERROR: "snapbuild state file ... has unsupported version 1 instead of 2" respectively. Given the low likelihood of anybody already using these new features in a production setup that seems acceptable. Fixing these issues made me notice that there's no regression test covering the loading of historic snapshot from disk - so add one. Backpatch to 9.4 where these features were introduced.

This feature, building on previous commits, allows the write-ahead log stream to be decoded into a series of logical changes; that is, inserts, updates, and deletes and the transactions which contain them. It is capable of handling decoding even across changes to the schema of the effected tables. The output format is controlled by a so-called "output plugin"; an example is included. To make use of this in a real replication system, the output plugin will need to be modified to produce output in the format appropriate to that system, and to perform filtering. Currently, information can be extracted from the logical decoding system only via SQL; future commits will add the ability to stream changes via walsender.
