We still have to build lwlocknames.h using Perl code, which initially I wanted to avoid, but it gives us the chance to cross-check wait_event_names.txt. With the makefile rules, the output of genbki.pl was written to src/backend/catalog/, and then the header files were linked to src/include/catalog/. This changes it so that the output files are written directly to src/include/catalog/. This makes the logic simpler, and it also makes the behavior consistent with the meson build system. Also, the list of catalog files is now kept in parallel in src/include/catalog/{meson.build,Makefile}, while before the makefiles had it in src/backend/catalog/Makefile. There isn't a lot of user demand for AIX support, we have a bunch of hacks to work around AIX-specific compiler bugs and idiosyncrasies, and no one has stepped up to the plate to properly maintain it. Remove support for AIX to get rid of that maintenance overhead. It's still supported for stable versions. The acute issue that triggered this decision was that after commit 8af2565248, the AIX buildfarm members have been hitting this assertion: TRAP: failed Assert("(uintptr_t) buffer == TYPEALIGN(PG_IO_ALIGN_SIZE, buffer)"), File: "md.c", Line: 472, PID: 2949728 Apperently the "pg_attribute_aligned(a)" attribute doesn't work on AIX for values larger than PG_IO_ALIGN_SIZE, for a static const variable. That could be worked around, but we decided to just drop the AIX support instead. Both lwlocknames.txt and wait_event_names.txt contain a list of all the predefined LWLocks, i.e., those with predefined positions within MainLWLockArray. It is easy to miss one or the other, especially since the list in wait_event_names.txt omits the "Lock" suffix from all the LWLock wait events. This commit adds a cross- check of these lists to the script that generates lwlocknames.h. If the lists do not match exactly, building will fail. 2023-11-06Remove distprepPeter Eisentraut
A PostgreSQL release tarball contains a number of prebuilt files, in particular files produced by bison, flex, perl, and well as html and man documentation. We have done this consistent with established practice at the time to not require these tools for building from a tarball. Some of these tools were hard to get, or get the right version of, from time to time, and shipping the prebuilt output was a convenience to users. Now this has at least two problems: One, we have to make the build system(s) work in two modes: Building from a git checkout and building from a tarball. This is pretty complicated, but it works so far for autoconf/make. It does not currently work for meson; you can currently only build with meson from a git checkout. Making meson builds work from a tarball seems very difficult or impossible. One particular problem is that since meson requires a separate build directory, we cannot make the build update files like gram.h in the source tree. So if you were to build from a tarball and update gram.y, you will have a gram.h in the source tree and one in the build tree, but the way things work is that the compiler will always use the one in the source tree. So you cannot, for example, make any gram.y changes when building from a tarball. This seems impossible to fix in a non-horrible way. Second, there is increased interest nowadays in precisely tracking the origin of software. We can reasonably track contributions into the git tree, and users can reasonably track the path from a tarball to packages and downloads and installs. But what happens between the git tree and the tarball is obscure and in some cases non-reproducible. The solution for both of these issues is to get rid of the step that adds prebuilt files to the tarball. The tarball now only contains what is in the git tree (*). Getting the additional build dependencies is no longer a problem nowadays, and the complications to keep these dual build modes working are significant. And of course we want to get the meson build system working universally. This commit removes the make distprep target altogether. The make dist target continues to do its job, it just doesn't call distprep anymore. (*) - The tarball also contains the INSTALL file that is built at make dist time, but not by distprep. This is unchanged for now. The make maintainer-clean target, whose job it is to remove the prebuilt files in addition to what make distclean does, is now just an alias to make distprep. (In practice, it is probably obsolete given that git clean is available.) This new view, wrapped around a SRF, shows some information known about wait events, as of: - Name. - Type (Activity, I/O, Extension, etc.). - Description. All the information retrieved comes from wait_event_names.txt, and the description is the same as the documentation with filters applied to remove any XML markups. The documentation and the code is generated automatically from a new file called wait_event_names.txt, formatted in sections dedicated to each wait event class (Timeout, Lock, IO, etc.) with three tab-separated fields: - C symbol in enums - Format in the system views - Description in the docs Using this approach has several advantages, as we have proved to be rather bad in maintaining this area of the tree across the years: - The order of each item in the documentation and the code, which should be alphabetical, has become incorrect multiple times, and the script generating the code and documentation has a few rules to enforce that, making the maintenance a no-brainer. - Some wait events were added to the code, but not documented, so this cannot be missed now. - The order of the tables for each wait event class is enforced in the documentation (the input .txt file does so as well for clarity, though this is not mandatory). - Less code, shaving 1.2k lines from the tree, with 1/3 of the savings coming from the code, the rest from the documentation. The wait event types "Lock" and "LWLock" still have their own code path for their code, hence only the documentation is created for them. These classes are listed with a special marker called WAIT_EVENT_DOCONLY in the input file. Adding a new wait event now requires only an update of wait_event_names.txt, with "Lock" and "LWLock" treated as exceptions. This commit has been tested with configure/Makefile, the CI and VPATH build. clean, distclean and maintainer-clean were working fine. 2023-02-17Redesign archive modulesMichael Paquier
A new callback named startup_cb, called shortly after a module is loaded, is added. This makes possible the initialization of any additional state data required by a module. This initial state data can be saved in a ArchiveModuleState, that is now passed down to all the callbacks that can be defined in a module. With this design, it is possible to have a per-module state, aimed at opening the door to the support of more than one archive module. The initialization of the callbacks is changed so as _PG_archive_module_init() does not anymore give in input a ArchiveModuleCallbacks that a module has to fill in with callback definitions. Instead, a module now needs to return a const ArchiveModuleCallbacks. All the structure and callback definitions of archive modules are moved into their own header, named archive_module.h, from pgarch.h. Command-based archiving follows the same line, with a new set of files named shell_archive.{c,h}. There are a few more items that are under discussion to improve the design of archive modules, like the fact that basic_archive calls sigsetjmp() by itself to define its own error handling flow. These will be adjusted later, the changes done here cover already a good portion of what has been discussed. Any modules created for v15 will need to be adjusted to this new design. Previously export_dynamic was set in src/makefiles/Makefile.$port. For solaris this required exporting with_gnu_ld. The determination of with_gnu_ld would be nontrivial to copy for meson PGXS compatibility. It's also nice to delete libtool.m4. This uses -Wl,--export-dynamic on all platforms, previously all platforms but FreeBSD used -Wl,-E. The likelihood of a name conflict seems lower with the longer spelling. 2022-07-09Automatically generate node support functionsPeter Eisentraut
Add a script to automatically generate the node support functions (copy, equal, out, and read, as well as the node tags enum) from the struct definitions. For each of the four node support files, it creates two include files, e.g., copyfuncs.funcs.c and copyfuncs.switch.c, to include in the main file. All the scaffolding of the main file stays in place. I have tried to mostly make the coverage of the output match what is currently there. For example, one could now do out/read coverage of utility statement nodes, but I have manually excluded those for now. The reason is mainly that it's easier to diff the before and after, and adding a bunch of stuff like this might require a separate analysis and review. Subtyping (TidScan -> Scan) is supported. For the hard cases, you can just write a manual function and exclude generating one. For the not so hard cases, there is a way of annotating struct fields to get special behaviors. For example, pg_node_attr(equal_ignore) has the field ignored in equal functions. (In this patch, I have only ifdef'ed out the code to could be removed, mainly so that it won't constantly have merge conflicts. It will be deleted in a separate patch. All the code comments that are worth keeping from those sections have already been moved to the header files where the structs are defined.) 2022-01-24Server-side gzip compression.Robert Haas
pg_basebackup's --compression option now lets you write either "client-gzip" or "server-gzip" instead of just "gzip" to specify where the compression should be performed. If you write simply "gzip" it's taken to mean "client-gzip" unless you also use --target, in which case it is interpreted to mean "server-gzip", because that's the only thing that makes any sense in that case. To make this work, the BASE_BACKUP command now takes new COMPRESSION and COMPRESSION_LEVEL options. At present, pg_basebackup cannot decompress .gz files, so server-side compression will cause a failure if (1) -Ft is not used or (2) -R is used or (3) -D- is used without --no-manifest. Along the way, I removed the information message added by commit 5c649fe153367cdab278738ee4aebbfd158e0546 which occurred if you specified no compression level and told you that the default level had been used instead. That seemed like more output than most people would want. Also along the way, this adds a check to the server for unrecognized base backup options. This repairs a bug introduced by commit 0ba281cb4bf9f5f65529dfa4c8282abb734dd454. This commit also adds some new test cases for pg_verifybackup. They take a server-side backup with and without compression, and then extract the backup if we have the OS facilities available to do so, and then run pg_verifybackup on the extracted directory. That is a good test of the functionality added by this commit and also improves test coverage for the backup target patch (commit 3500ccc39b0dadd1068a03938e4b8ff562587ccc) and for pg_verifybackup itself. This adds a key management system that stores (currently) two data encryption keys of length 128, 192, or 256 bits. The data keys are AES256 encrypted using a key encryption key, and validated via GCM cipher mode. A command to obtain the key encryption key must be specified at initdb time, and will be run at every database server start. New parameters allow a file descriptor open to the terminal to be passed. pg_upgrade support has also been added. When maintaining or merging patches, one of the most common sources for conflicts are the list of objects in makefiles. Especially when the split across lines has been changed on both sides, which is somewhat common due to attempting to stay below 80 columns, those conflicts are unnecessarily laborious to resolve. By splitting, and alphabetically sorting, OBJS style lines into one object per line, conflicts should be less frequent, and easier to resolve when they still occur. 2019-03-16Partial implementation of SQL/JSON path languageAlexander Korotkov
SQL 2016 standards among other things contains set of SQL/JSON features for JSON processing inside of relational database. The core of SQL/JSON is JSON path language, allowing access parts of JSON documents and make computations over them. This commit implements partial support JSON path language as separate datatype called "jsonpath". The implementation is partial because it's lacking datetime support and suppression of numeric errors. Missing features will be added later by separate commits. Support of SQL/JSON features requires implementation of separate nodes, and it will be considered in subsequent patches. This commit includes following set of plain functions, allowing to execute jsonpath over jsonb values: * jsonb_path_exists(jsonb, jsonpath[, jsonb, bool]), * jsonb_path_match(jsonb, jsonpath[, jsonb, bool]), * jsonb_path_query(jsonb, jsonpath[, jsonb, bool]), * jsonb_path_query_array(jsonb, jsonpath[, jsonb, bool]). * jsonb_path_query_first(jsonb, jsonpath[, jsonb, bool]). This commit also implements "jsonb @? jsonpath" and "jsonb @@ jsonpath", which are wrappers over jsonpath_exists(jsonb, jsonpath) and jsonpath_predicate(jsonb, jsonpath) correspondingly. These operators will have an index support (implemented in subsequent patches). Catversion bumped, to add new functions and operators. 2019-01-02Ensure link commands list *.o files before LDFLAGS.Tom Lane
It's important for link commands to list *.o input files before -l switches for libraries, as library code may not get pulled into the link unless referenced by an earlier command-line entry. This is certainly necessary for static libraries (.a style). Apparently on some platforms it is also necessary for shared libraries, as reported by Donald Dong. We often put -l switches for within-tree libraries into LDFLAGS, meaning that link commands that list *.o files after LDFLAGS are hazardous. Most of our link commands got this right, but a few did not. In particular, places that relied on gmake's default implicit link rule failed, because that puts LDFLAGS first. Fix that by overriding the built-in rule with our own. The implicit link rules in src/makefiles/Makefile.* for single-.o-file shared libraries mostly got this wrong too, so fix them. I also changed the link rules for the backend and a couple of other places for consistency, even though they are not (currently) at risk because they aren't adding any -l switches to LDFLAGS. Arguably, the real problem here is that we're abusing LDFLAGS by putting -l switches in it and we should stop doing that. But changing that would be quite invasive, so I'm not eager to do so. Perhaps this is a candidate for back-patching, but so far it seems that problems can only be exhibited in test code we don't normally build, and at least some of the problems are new in HEAD anyway. recovery.conf settings are now set in postgresql.conf (or other GUC sources). Currently, all the affected settings are PGC_POSTMASTER; this could be refined in the future case by case. Recovery is now initiated by a file recovery.signal. Standby mode is initiated by a file standby.signal. The standby_mode setting is gone. If a recovery.conf file is found, an error is issued. The trigger_file setting has been renamed to promote_trigger_file as part of the move. The documentation chapter "Recovery Configuration" has been integrated into "Server Configuration". pg_basebackup -R now appends settings to postgresql.auto.conf and creates a standby.signal file. Make these rules look more like the ones associated with genbki.pl, to wit: * Use a stamp file to record when we last ran the script, instead of relying on the timestamps of the individual output files. * Take the knowledge out of backend/Makefile and put it in utils/Makefile where it belongs. I moved down the handling of errcodes.h and probes.h too, although those continue to be built by separate processes. In itself, this is just much-needed cleanup with little practical effect. However, by decoupling these makefile rules from the timestamps of the generated header files, we open the door to not advancing those timestamps unnecessarily, which will be taken advantage of by the next commit. msvc/Solution.pm should be taught to do things similarly, but I'll leave that for another commit. Commit 372728b0d created some problems for usages like building a subdirectory without having first done "make all" at the top level, or for proceeding directly to "make install" without "make all". The only reasonably clean way to fix this seems to be to force the submake-generated-headers rule to fire in *any* "make all" or "make install" command anywhere in the tree. To avoid lots of redundant work, as well as parallel make jobs possibly clobbering each others' output, we still need to be sure that the rule fires only once in a recursive build. For that, adopt the same MAKELEVEL hack previously used for "temp-install". But try to document it a bit better. The submake-errcodes mechanism previously used in src/port/ and src/common/ is subsumed by this, so we can get rid of those special cases. It was inadequate for src/common/ anyway after the aforesaid commit, and it always risked parallel attempts to build errcodes.h. Historically, the initial catalog data to be installed during bootstrap has been written in DATA() lines in the catalog header files. This had lots of disadvantages: the format was badly underdocumented, it was very difficult to edit the data in any mechanized way, and due to the lack of any abstraction the data was verbose, hard to read/understand, and easy to get wrong. Hence, move this data into separate ".dat" files and represent it in a way that can easily be read and rewritten by Perl scripts. The new format is essentially "key => value" for each column; while it's a bit repetitive, explicit labeling of each value makes the data far more readable and less error-prone. Provide a way to abbreviate entries by omitting field values that match a specified default value for their column. This allows removal of a large amount of repetitive boilerplate and also lowers the barrier to adding new columns. Also teach genbki.pl how to translate symbolic OID references into numeric OIDs for more cases than just "regproc"-like pg_proc references. It can now do that for regprocedure-like references (thus solving the problem that regproc is ambiguous for overloaded functions), operators, types, opfamilies, opclasses, and access methods. Use this to turn nearly all OID cross-references in the initial data into symbolic form. This represents a very large step forward in readability and error resistance of the initial catalog data. It should also reduce the difficulty of renumbering OID assignments in uncommitted patches. Also, solve the longstanding problem that frontend code that would like to use OID macros and other information from the catalog headers often had difficulty with backend-only code in the headers. To do this, arrange for all generated macros, plus such other declarations as we deem fit, to be placed in "derived" header files that are safe for frontend inclusion. (Once clients migrate to using these pg_*_d.h headers, it will be possible to get rid of the pg_*_fn.h headers, which only exist to quarantine code away from clients. That is left for follow-on patches, however.) The now-automatically-generated macros include the Anum_xxx and Natts_xxx constants that we used to have to update by hand when adding or removing catalog columns. Replace the former manual method of generating OID macros for pg_type entries with an automatic method, ensuring that all built-in types have OID macros. (But note that this patch does not change the way that OID macros for pg_proc entries are built and used. It's not clear that making that match the other catalogs would be worth extra code churn.) Add SGML documentation explaining what the new data format is and how to work with it. Despite being a very large change in the catalog headers, there is no catversion bump here, because postgres.bki and related output files haven't changed at all. Add a new module backend/partitioning/partprune.c, implementing a more sophisticated algorithm for partition pruning. The new module uses each partition's "boundinfo" for pruning instead of constraint exclusion, based on an idea proposed by Robert Haas of a "pruning program": a list of steps generated from the query quals which are run iteratively to obtain a list of partitions that must be scanned in order to satisfy those quals. At present, this targets planner-time partition pruning, but there exist further patches to apply partition pruning at execution time as well. This commit also moves some definitions from include/catalog/partition.h to a new file include/partitioning/partbounds.h, in an attempt to rationalize partitioning related code.
