4 daysSplit some long Makefile listsMichael Paquier
This change makes more readable code diffs when adding new items or removing old items, while ensuring that lines do not get excessively long. Some SUBDIRS, PROGRAMS and REGRESS lists are split. Note that there are a few more REGRESS lists that could be split, particularly in contrib/. 2024-04-03Provide API for streaming relation data.Thomas Munro
Introduce an abstraction allowing relation data to be accessed as a stream of buffers, with an implementation that is more efficient than the equivalent sequence of ReadBuffer() calls. Client code supplies a callback that can say which block number it wants next, and then consumes individual buffers one at a time from the stream. This division puts read_stream.c in control of how far ahead it can see and allows it to read clusters of neighboring blocks with StartReadBuffers(). It also issues POSIX_FADV_WILLNEED advice ahead of time when random access is detected. Other variants of I/O stream will be proposed in future work (for example to support recovery, whose LsnReadQueue device in xlogprefetcher.c is a distant cousin of this code and should eventually be replaced by this), but this basic API is sufficient for many common executor usage patterns involving predictable access to a single fork of a single relation. Several patches using this API are proposed separately. This stream concept is loosely based on ideas from Andres Freund on how we should pave the way for later work on asynchronous I/O. 2019-04-04Refactor the fsync queue for wider use.Thomas Munro
Previously, md.c and checkpointer.c were tightly integrated so that fsync calls could be handed off and processed in the background. Introduce a system of callbacks and file tags, so that other modules can hand off fsync work in the same way. For now only md.c uses the new interface, but other users are being proposed. Since there may be use cases that are not strictly SMGR implementations, use a new function table for sync handlers rather than extending the traditional SMGR one. Instead of using a bitmapset of segment numbers for each RelFileNode in the checkpointer's hash table, make the segment number part of the key. This requires sending explicit "forget" requests for every segment individually when relations are dropped, but suits the file layout schemes of proposed future users better (ie sparse or high segment numbers). do anything yet, but it has the necessary connections to initialization and so forth. Make some gestures towards allowing number of blocks in a relation to be BlockNumber, ie, unsigned int, rather than signed int. (I doubt I got all the places that are sloppy about it, yet.) On the way, replace the hardwired NLOCKS_PER_XACT fudge factor with a GUC variable.

1998-04-06Hi,Bruce Momjian
Attached you'll find a (big) patch that fixes make dep and make depend in all Makefiles where I found it to be appropriate. It also removes the dependency in Makefile.global for NAMEDATALEN and OIDNAMELEN by making backend/catalog/genbki.sh and bin/initdb/initdb.sh a little smarter. This no longer requires initdb.sh that is turned into initdb with a sed script when installing Postgres, hence initdb.sh should be renamed to initdb (after the patch has been applied :-) ) This patch is against the 6.3 sources, as it took a while to complete. Please review and apply, Cheers, Jeroen van Vianen

Subject: [PORTS] Patches for Irix 6.4 I have worked out how to compile PostgreSQL on Irix 6.4 using the -n32 compiler mode and version 7.1 of the C compiler. (The n32 compiler use 32 bits addressing, but allows access to all the instructions in the MIPS4 instruction set.) There were several problems: 1) The ld command is not referenced as a macro in all the Makefiles. On this platform, you have to include -n32 on all the ld commands. Makefiles were changed as needed. 3) Lots of warnings are generated from the compiler. Since the regression tests worked OK, I didn't attempt to fix them. If anyone wants the compilation log, please let me know, and I'll email it to you. The version of postgresql was 970602. Here is Makefile.custom: CUSTOM_COPT = -O2 -n32 MK_NO_LORDER = 1 LD = ld -n32 CC += -n32
